INTRODUCTION
Hello, everyone! Today, we’re diving into a fundamental topic in
geometry that will be the building block for many more concepts you'll
learn in math. We’re going to explore lines and angles!
Think of lines as straight paths that go on forever in both directions.
They are everywhere in the world around us—roads, the edges of
books, and even the borders of your notebook. Angles are the space
between two lines that meet at a point. They help us understand
shapes and how they fit together.
In this lesson, we’ll learn about different types of lines, like parallel
lines that never meet and intersecting lines that cross each other.
We’ll also explore various types of angles, such as right angles, acute
angles, and obtuse angles.
By the end of this lecture, you’ll not only be able to identify these lines
and angles but also understand how they relate to each other. So, get
ready to sharpen your pencils and your minds, because we’re about to
uncover the fascinating world of lines and angles together!
SO TODAY WE ARE GOING TO LEARN
LINES AND ANGLES…
BASIC TERMS AND DEFINITION
LINE : A straight path extending in both
directions with no end points.
LINE SEGMENT: A part of a line that includes two
points, called endpoints, and all the points
between them.
RAY:A part of a line, with one endpoint, that
continues without end in one direction.
ANGLES
An angle is the figure formed by two rays sharing a
common endpoint, called the vertex of the angle. The
magnitude of the angle is the amount of rotation that
separates the two rays, and can be measured by
considering the length of circular arc swept out when
one ray is rotated about the vertex to coincide with the
other.
TYPES OF ANGLES
Acute angle
Right angle
Obtuse angle
Straight angle
Complementary angle
Supplementary angle
Adjacent angle
Linear pair of angles
Vertically opposite angles
ACUTE ANGLES
The measure of an angle with a measure between 0 0
and 90o or with less than 90o radians
RIGHT ANGLE
An angle formed by the perpendicular intersection of
two straight lines, an angle of 90o.
OBTUSE ANGLE
An angle measures greater than 90 degrees but less
than 180 degrees.
STRAIGHT ANGLE
A straight angle changes the direction to point the
opposite way. It looks like a straight line. It measures
180o (half a revolution or two right angles.)
COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES
When the sum of the measures of two angles is 90 0 the
angles are called complementary angles.
SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES
When the sum of the measures of two angles is 180 0
the angles are called supplementary angles.
ADJACENT ANGLES
In geometry, adjacent angles are angles that have a
common ray coming out of the vertex going between
two other rays. In other words, they are angles that
are side by side, or adjacent.
LINEAR PAIR OF ANGLES
A pair of adjacent angles formed by intersecting lines.
Linear pair of angles are supplementary.
VERTICALLY OPPOSITE ANGLES
A pair of angles is said to be vertical if the angles are
formed from two intersecting lines and the angles are
not adjacent. They all share a vertex. Such angles are
equal in measure and can be described as congruent.
