How to read Resistor Color Codes :-
1) The first two bands represent the most significant
digits of the resistance value.
2) The third band indicates the multiplier telling you
how many zeros to add.
3) The tolerance band (the deviation from the
specified value) is next, usually spaced away from 4
the others , or it’s a little bit wider.
To calculate the value of given
resistors using colour code table-
EXAMPLE-1
5
FIRST BAND – BROWN =
1
SECOND BAND -- BLACK = 0 => 10
MULTIPLIER -- BROWN = 10=>
1
10X101 = 100 Ohm
TOLERANCE -- SILVER = +/- 10 %
Therefore the value of the above given resistor will be –
(Brown,Black,Brown,and Silver )= 100 Ohm, +/- 10% Tolerance6
EXAMPLE-2
7
FIRST BAND -- RED = 2
SECOND BAND -- VIOLET = 7 => 27
MULTIPLIER -- ORANGE = 103 = 1K 27 X 103 Ohm = 27 Kohm
TOLERANCE -- GOLD = +/- 5%
Therefore the value of the above given resistor will be –
(Red,Violet,Orange,and Gold ) = 27 Kilo-Ohm (Kohm), +/- 5% Tolerance
8
(1Kilo-ohm (1K) = 1000 ohm = 103 ohm )
EXAMPLE - 3
9
FIRST BAND -- GRAY = 8
SECOND BAND -- GREEN = 5 => 85
MULTIPLIER -- BLUE = 106 = 1M 85 X 106Ohm = 85 Mohm
TOLERANCE -- NO COLOUR = +/- 20%
Therefore the value of the above given resistor will be –
(Gray,Green,Blue,and No Colour ) = 85 Mega-Ohm (Mohm), +/- 20% Tolerance
10
(1 Mega-ohm (M) = 1000000 ohm = 106 ohm )
TO IDENTIFY THE COLOURS OF
GIVEN RESISTORS USING COLOUR
CODE TABLE-
1) 150 ohm , 5%
=> 15 x 101 = 150
1 For Brown
5 For Green
10 =>1 For Brown
5 For Gold
Therefore,Colors of 150 ohm , 5% resistor are
(Brown , Green , Brown , Gold)
2) 1kilo-ohm (1kohm) , 10%
=> 10 x 102 = 103 ohm = 1 kilo-ohm
1 For Brown
0 For Black
10 =>2 For Red
10 For Silver
Therefore Colours of 1kilo-ohm resistor are
(Brown , Black , Red , Silver)
3) 10 Mega-ohm (10 Mohm) , 10%
=> 10 x 106 = 10 Mega-ohm
1 For Brown
0 For Black
10 => 6 For Blue
10 For Silver
Therefore Colors of 10 Mega-ohm resistor are
(Brown, Black , Blue , Silver)
