Human Computer Interaction
THE INTERACTION
Overview
Definition
Definition
- Interaction is the communication
between two or more elements.
- In case of HCI, by HCI we mean that
the communication between a computer
and a human
-There are different models of interaction
Terms of Interaction
Domain: area of expertise, e.g. designing,
accounts, etc.
Concepts:
Tasks: Operations
Interaction Models
Norman’s Execution Evaluation Cycle:
- Most important in HCI.
- Two major phases:
Execution and Evaluation
- But total Seven Stages.
Interaction Models
Norman’s Execution Evaluation Cycle:
1. Establishing the Goal
2. Forming the Intention
3. Specifying the Action Sequence
4. Executing the Action
5. Perceiving the System State
6. Interpreting the System State
7. Evaluating the system state with respect to the
goals and the intentions.
Interaction Models
Example of Norman’s Execution Evaluation Cycle:
1) Establishing the Goal
I need more light to read / To get more light
2) Forming the Intention
Switch on the desk lamp.
3) Specifying the Action Sequence
Turn on by myself or ask some one
4) Executing the Action
Light is turned On
5) Perceiving the System State
Light/Lamp got On or Not
6) Interpreting the System State
If light is not on (WHY?) if On then point 7.
7) Evaluating the system state with respect to the goals and the intentions.
Enough or not…. If not again point 1.
Interaction Models
Example of Norman’s Execution
Evaluation Cycle:
Make seven steps for performing some task
for example if “you want to make the text
prominent”.

and Mistakes. P-127.
Interaction Models
The Interaction framework:
- Extension to Norman’s model
- Deals with System’s communication
- Four Components
- System
- User
- Input
- Output
Interaction Models
The Interaction framework:
How it works:
- User forms a goal and finds a task
- He Inputs the task to the machine
- System Transforms an d executes
- Output shows the result

Design Focus:
Video Recorder (Ineffective Interaction)
-Recording from a VCR through Remote Ctrl
- User not able to communicate (Articulation
Problem)
- Remote Control lacks the ability to select the
channels (performance problem)
- VCR panel does not show its recording
(presentation problem)
- User does not interpret (observation Problem)
