Single Phase Motor Overview and Types

A single-phase motor is an electric machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, commonly used in applications like fans and washing machines. It operates through rotating coils driven by magnetic forces and consists of components such as the rotor, stator, and centrifugal switch. Various types include split-phase, capacitor, and universal motors, with specific winding configurations for starting and running operations.

SINGLE PHASE MOTOR

ELECTRIC MOTOR
• an electric machine that converts electrical
energy into mechanical energy

• involve rotating coils of wire driven by

magnetic force exerted by a magnetic field on
an electric current.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
APPLICATIONS
• Electric fan
• Washing machine
• Air blower
• Water pump
• Compressor
TYPES OF SINGLE PHASE MOTOR
• Split-phase
• Capacitor Motor
• Repulsion Motor
• Universal Motor
SPLIT PHASE MOTOR ASSEMBLY
• ROTOR
• STATOR
• ENDPLATES/END SHELL/END
BELLS/BRACKETS
• CENTRIFUGAL SWTICH
ROTOR
• Rotational part of
the motor
• Consist of 3 essential
elements
– Core
– Shaft
– Squirrel /rotor
winding
STATOR

• Laminated iron core with

semiclosed slots
• It has two stator windings
run winding and start
winding
STATOR WINDINGS
• Start Winding
– Use only for starting the motor
– made up of fine wire (6 to 7 size smaller than run)
– Lesser number of turns than run (20-30%)
• Run Winding
– Connected continuously to the supply at running
operation
– Wound at the bottom of the slots
Both windings are connected parallel and placed 90
degrees apart from each other
END PLATES
• Fastened to the stator frame by means of screws or bolts
• Serves to keep the rotor in position
• The bore of endplates which the rotor shaft is fitted with ball
bearings or sleeve bearings
• Sustains the weight of the rotor to keep it centered within
stator to avoid rubbing of the rotor to the stator
CENTRIFUGAL SWITCH
• The role of the centrifugal switch is to disconnect all or part of
the start circuit, from the supply once the rotor has reached
between 75 and 80% of its full speed.

connected to the line.

Running operation:
When the motor reach a
predetermined speed (70-80%),
centrifugal switch will tend to
open disconnecting start winding
from the supply

TAKING DATA BEFORE STRIPPING
The purpose of taking data before stripping the winding

a. To enable any repair person to rewind the

motor without loss of time

b. So that no difficulty will be encountered when the

motor is rewound

c. To obtain the desired output/operation the same

from the original/old design.
TAKING DATA
• Nameplate data
• Number of poles (run and start)
• Coil pitch/coil span
(number of slot separating the sides of the coil including
the slots where the winding lies)
• Number of turns
• Wire size
• Connection
• Winding position
• Number of slots
NAMEPLATE
• Manufacturer’s type
• Horsepower
• Time rating
• Temperature
• Speed (rpm) at full load
• Frequency
• Current at full load

CLEANING AND VARNISHING

• The purpose of cleaning is to remove the dust, oil, rust, and

other impurities accumulated in the windings or core which
prevents the varnish to penetrate to the winding or to the
core
Materials use for cleaning:
• Dry clean cloth
• Sand paper
• Air blower
• Steel brush
• Brush
The purpose of varnishing is to:

1. Secure the wires so that they wont vibrate and short to

one another
2. Provide another coat insulation for the whole coil
group
3. Provide a path for heat to escape from within the coil
4. To add beauty to the winding
5. Prevent the core from corroding/rusting
