Problem
Statement
Cockcroft Walton’s voltage
multiplier faces limitations such
as voltage drop, voltage ripple,
and low efficiency when used in
industrial applications. To
address this issue, a high-
frequency high voltage multiplier
is used consisting of high
frequency inverter.
3
Objectives
• The comparison of two designs and the
development of this supply will be the
main topics of this project.
• Developing the first design for an output
voltage of 10kV DC voltage.
• Developing the second design for a high
frequency input voltage.
• Study the effects of high frequency on
voltage drop and ripple voltage.
• Implementing first design on hardware.
4
What is a CW voltage multiplier?
• An extension of the voltage doubler circuit
connected in series to produce n times the
voltage where n is the number of stages.
• They utilize a number of capacitors and
diodes for multiplication.
• Characteristics:
• Produces high voltages for small input.
• Converts AC to DC.
• Simple circuit made up of diodes and
capacitors.
• Drawbacks:
• Output voltage drops for high resistance.
• Increase in ripples for supplying output
current.
• Voltages of higher stages sag as
number of stage increases.
5
VOLTAGE DOUBLERS
A voltage doubler is an electronic circuit that has an output of twice the input voltage by charging a capacitor from the input voltage.
If we give and AC input of 10V we will get the output of 20V.

Cockroft WALTON VOLTAGE
MULTIPLIER
• The voltage multiplier circuit is an AC-to-DC voltage conversion circuit
consisting of n stages
• The voltage multiplier circuit is able to produce any output voltage in principle
by increasing the number of stages.
• The effective use of voltage multiplier circuits can realize the high voltage
conversion up to 100’s kV range and are cost-efficient.
• There are several different topologies for voltage multiplier circuits and the
most commonly used one is the series Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier
circuit shown.
• For no load CW multiplier, the output voltage is given as Vo=2nVmax where n
is the number of stages and Vmax is the peak value of input voltage.

Important Application of CW
voltage multiplier
• X-rays

drop and ripple
• Right image: Imaging under low
voltage drop and ripple.
8
Due to the existence of output load, voltage drop
and voltage ripple across capacitors exist in a
With load. steady state in the voltage multiplier circuit. There
will be a decline in output voltage.

Components selection.
.
• Capacitors:
• Capacitors with low leakages current.
• With voltage rating two times the input voltage.
• Large capacitance to reduce ripples.
• Diodes Selection:
• Low forward voltage.
• VRRM should be two times the input voltage.
• High forward current.
• Fast reverse recovery rate.
