What is prostatitis

Prostatitis is an infection or inflammation to the prostate gland.


The prostate gland is present only in men. Its job is to make some of the fluid that
men release during sex. The prostate gland from a ring around the urethra, the tube
that carries urine from bladder to the end of the penis.
What causes prostatitis

Prostatitis can be
Acute prostatitis : usually causes by bacteria, ([Link], klebsiella porticus.)
Chronic prostatitis: can be causes by bacteria , but sometime happen
even when there is no bacteria infection.
Incidence

 Prostatitis is one of the most common disorder seeing in united state


of America about 2 million outpatient visit per year.
 about 25 percent of male patients presenting with genitourinary
system.
 Autopsy studies have revealed a histologic prevalence of prostatitis of
64-86 percent .
Pathophysiology
What are symptoms of prostatitis

There are different types of prostatitis, and they each causes different
symptoms.
Common symptoms are:
Fever
Chills
Flu like symptoms
Pain when they urinate
Pain in or near the genitals
Cloudy urine
Chronic prostatitis symptoms
 Sometime have no symptoms . When they do have symptoms ,they
can:
 Have pain when they urinate
 feel like they have to urinate a lot more often than normal
 Have the sudden need to urinate in hurry
 Have pain in or near the groin or genitals
 Have a low grade fever
Diagnostic test

 Rectal examination
 Urinalysis ;urine , WBC
 Bacteria ; blood culture
Treatment

Acute treatment Chronic treatment

Fluoroquinolones Anti biotics


Ciprofloxacin Anti- inflammation drugs
Alpha blocker: dilate the uthera

If allergies: trimethoprim/
sulfamethoxazole
Nursing management

 Nursing process of patient with prostatitis are:


 Assessment
 Diagnosis
 Nursing interventions
 admin. Med
 comfort measure:
 size baths
 Fluid ( do not force fluid)
Nursing diagnosis
 Acute pain related to bladder distention secondary to enlarge
prostate as manifested by complaints of discomfort
 Activity intolerance related to presence of tenderness as evidence by
enlarge of prostate gland.
 Risk of inflammation.
Health education
 High levels of stress , obesity, cigarette smoking and inactivity have all been
linked with increased risk of prostate disease:
reduce stress
eat healthy
keep active
quite smoking / tobacco
Diet

 High quality protein are usually benefit for the treatment of an


enlarged prostate.

 Food high in zinc especially nuts, seeds, shellfish, meat, and egg are
good diet for prostatitis patient.
