Learning Objectives:
ALL (grade 3) – Understand nuclear symbols and know what
atomic number and mass number represent. (Annotate the nuclear
symbol for lithium)

MOST (grade 5) – Know how to work out the number of protons,

neutrons and electrons in an atom of an element. (Complete
worksheet)

SOME (grade 7) – Know that esters are formed from the reaction
between carboxylic acids and alcohols. (Complete practical)
ALL (grade 3) – Understand nuclear symbols and know what atomic number and mass number represent. (Annotate the
nuclear symbol for lithium)

 Using lithium as an example, what do you think the numbers on

the periodic table tell us about the structure of the atom?
ALL (grade 3) – Understand nuclear symbols and know what atomic number and mass number represent. (Annotate the
nuclear symbol for lithium)

A nuclear symbol of an atom is the chemical symbol for the element

with two numbers by it.
The smaller number is the atomic number. This is the number of
protons, which conveniently also tells us the number of electrons.
The larger number is the mass number. This is the total number of
protons and neutrons.
