Introduction to Sentence Types

“Sentence Basics”

• Simple Sentence: 1 idea. (“I went to the park.”

• Compound Sentence: 2+ ideas of equal importance. (“I went to the park, and I
had a picnic.”)

• Complex Sentence: 1 main idea + 1 extra detail. (“I went to the park because the
weather was sunny.”)
What is a Compound Sentence?

• Definition: A sentence with two or more independent clauses joined by a


conjunction.

• Key Conjunctions:
• and, but, or, so, yet

• Examples:
• “I like coffee, and my friend likes tea.”
• “I wanted to go, but it was raining.”
What is a Complex Sentence?
• Definition: A sentence with one independent clause and one or more dependent
clauses (cannot stand alone).

• Key Conjunctions:
• because, although, while, if, since, when

• Examples:
• “I stayed home because it was raining.”
• “Although I was tired, I finished my homework.”
Compound vs. Complex Sentences

How Are They Different?

Compound Complex
Combines equal ideas. Combines a main idea + detail.
Uses: and, but, so, or. Uses: because, although, while.
“I was late, so I ran.” “Because I was late, I ran.”
Practice: Expand the Sentences
Turn Simple Sentences into Compound or Complex

1. Start with a simple sentence.
2. Use a conjunction to expand it.

• Simple: “She is cooking dinner.”
