• Lower mud contamination

Soft Shut in Hard Shut in

Requires more steps and time Well is closed more quickly

Larger volume of kick Small volume of kick

Lower BHP Higher BHP (MAASP could be exceeded)

Instructions
Supervisor
• Action to take in case of drilling break/influx detection
• Observe warning sign(s): ROP break, gain, …
• P/Up string off BTM according to correct space out
• Chain down driller brake
• Stop RPM
• Turn off mud pump(s)
• Flow check the well:
• Positive:
• shut the well in, confirm the well is shut-in and there is no extra gain or leakage in BOP
• Inform supervisor
• Record: SIDPP, SICP, pit gain VS. time (every 5-10 min)
• Negative: inform supervisor, circulate BTM’s up, Cont. drilling
• Ensure that driller fills the trip sheet
Prepare to Drill
Driller
• Record kill rate circulating pressures as requested by supervisor or on
driller’s own initiative.
Instruct Driller to Record Kill
Rate Circulating Pressure at
Given Pump Speeds
Supervisor
• SCR should be taken for at least 2 pumps at 2 rates (e.g., 30 & 40
SPM)

MP# Flow Rate (gpm) SPP (psi)

3
Alarms Setting
Driller
• Adjust and activate flow indicator alarms:
e.g.,: Return Flow=±10-15%, Pit Dev.=±5-10 bbl,
• Adjust and activate PVT alarms
Check Alarm Settings
Supervisor
• Give driller alarm settings:
• Return Flow=±10-15%, Pit Dev.=±5-10 bbl, PVT alarms=
• Check driller has set alarms accurately
• Give driller operation parameters: e.g., WOB=25 klbs, RPM=120,
F.R=400 gpm, SPM1=SPM2=30
Drilling Break
Driller
• Recognize drilling break
• Record stabilized ROP after drilling initiation, then activate auto driller or use constant parameters: WOB=20
klbs, RPM=120, SPM1&2=30
• Take correct action
• P/Up string off BTM according to correct space out
• Chain down driller brake
• Stop RPM
• Turn off mud pump(s)
• Flow check the well:
• Positive:
• shut the well in, confirm the well is shut-in and there is no extra gain or leakage in BOP
• Inform supervisor
• Record: SIDPP, SICP, pit gain VS. time (every 5-10 min)
• Negative: circulate BTM’s up, Cont. drilling
• Reset flow alarms
• Inhibit alarm
Kick Detection and Well Shut-in
Driller
• Follow correct procedure before shutting the well in:
• P/Up string off BTM according to correct space out
• Chain down driller brake
• Stop RPM
• Turn off mud pump(s)
• Flow check the well
• Shut the well in
• Inform supervisor immediately
Problem.5-BOP Failure
Driller
• Recognize BOP does not seal
• Check pit gain after closing BOP
• Activate another BOP and inform supervisor
Collect Shut-in Data
Driller
• Correctly record pressure readings: SIDPP, SICP, depth
• Correctly record pit gain
Collect Shut-in Data from Driller
and Re-Check
Supervisor
• Hole Depth
• SIDPP
• SICP
• Gain
Monitor BHP
Driller
• Monitor surface pressures and report to supervisor
• Increasing both SIDPP and SICP indicates kick migration

Note: Supervisor should calculate MAASP during filling up kill sheet and
driller should ensure that CP doesn’t exceed MAASP (by adjusting
choke)
MAASP
Monitor BHP
Supervisor
• Instruct driller to monitor pressure changes and to inform supervisor
• Complete a usable kill sheet within 15 minutes
