ASSIGNMENT
SOIL CLASSIFICATION
Deadline of Submission:
April 26, 2025
PROBLEM A
• Determine the soil classification using (a) USCS, (b) AASHTO
(c) group index of the soil
• # 4 = 100% passing Cu =4.5
• #10 = 100% passing Cc = 1.6
• #40 = 90%
• #200 = 65%

Since the passing % of sieve 200 = 25% therefore use the coarse grained soils flow chart

Problem C. A sample of a dry coarse-grained material of 500
grams was shaken through a nest of sieves and the following
results are obtained:
Problem D. Determine the soil classification using (a) USCS,
(b) AASHTO (c) USDA if the amount of silt is 60% of the fine
soil and clay is 40% of the fine soil. The Plastic Limit is 21%
and Liquid Limit is 44%. Determine the characteristic of the
soil using the Group Index, Liquidity Index and Consistency
Index.
Problem E
Determine the plasticity index, liquidity index (water content is 26%), activity
of clay minerals (if it is found that 5% of the sample consist of particles
smaller than 0.002 mm and the characteristics of the soil sample if the sieve
test results is shown below. The soil sample has been tested using a
pycnometer test and the specific gravity is 2.80. Using the Liquid Limit
apparatus and Plastic Limit, the following data are obtained:
