What is climate science?

Climate science is the interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on understanding the Earth's climate
system, including its components, processes, and interactions, as well as how it changes over time.
This field combines principles from various branches of science, such as atmospheric science,
oceanography, meteorology, geology, and ecology, to analyze patterns in temperature, precipitation,
sea levels, and other climate-related variables.

Climate change: Investigating how and why the climate changes over time, both naturally and as a result of
human activities, such as greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation.
Vocabulary
● Greenhouse gases- gases in the atmosphere that raise the surface temp of planets
● Global warming- warmer temperatures over time
● Sustainable- able to be maintained
● Mitigation- action of reducing the seriousness of something
● International agreement- way that states/countries agree to do something
● Fossil fuels- a natural fuel such as coal or gas
● Carbon footprint- a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere
as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organization, or community
Vocabulary

● Generate- make or produce

● Consequence- result, usually negative
● Scarcity- lack of
● Severe- intense
● Catastrophic- really bad, causes big catastrophe/disaster
● Renewable- not used up completely when it is used
Discussion Questions

● What are some of the main consequences of climate change that you have
heard of?
● What are some solutions to combating climate change? Do you think they are
realistic?
● How is climate change affecting the environment in Bosnia/the Balkans?
● Do you believe that individual actions can make a big difference in fighting
climate change? How can individuals help fight climate change in their
everyday lives?
Discussion Questions

1. Do you think the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement are

realistic? Why or why not?
2. What do you think about countries that didn’t sign or withdrew from
the agreement? Do you think it’s important for all countries to be
involved?
3. Why is international cooperation (countries working together)
important in fighting climate change?
