What is Static Kramer Drive?
• A Static Kramer Drive is a speed control method used for wound rotor
induction motors that helps recover the slip power and reuses it to assist the
motor.
• It uses a rectifier and a DC motor, feeding it back mechanically to assist the
motor’s shaft
• It improves efficiency and provides below-synchronous speed control in
large industrial machines.
Why do we use it?
In a wound rotor induction motor:
• As the rotor runs slower than synchronous speed, some power is lost in
the rotor circuit.
• Instead of wasting this slip power as heat in resistors, the Static Kramer
Drive captures it and puts it back to use, improving efficiency.
Working:
[Link] motor runs below synchronous speed, so slip power appears in the
rotor.
2. This slip power is taken out from the rotor through slip rings.
3. It is passed through a rectifier.
4. The DC power is fed to a DC motor (or DC load), which is mechanically
coupled to the induction motor's shaft.
5. This helps the motor shaft rotate, the lost slip power is recovered and
reused.
Speed control:
DC MOTOR SPEED EQUATION:
N=V−IaRa/k⋅Φ
From this we know that,
N∝V
Since Φ∝If and N∝1/ Φ
N∝1/ If
Advantages:
• Improved efficiency
• Good for constant-speed, high-power loads
• Simpler than other recovery methods
Disadvantages:
• Only works for wound rotor motors.
• Uses a mechanical coupling.
• Speed control is limited to below synchronous speed
