IV SET
• PARTS OF IV SET
 A plastic canula which has to be inserted into
the IV bottle
 A clear plastic tubing
 Murphy's chamber-which allows regulation of
the speed of IV drip by counting the number of
drops per min.
 Connector-which should be connected to the
IV canula.
• 1 ml = 16 drops
• 1 ml=60 microdrops

• Uses of IV set
 Administration of IV fluids
 Administration of drugs
 Administration TPN (total parental nutrition)
• Complication
 Thrombophlitis
 Rigors following IV infusion
 Air embolism-This can be prevented by
avoiding by flushing the plastic tubing of IV set
with the IV fluid before connecting.

• Uses
 Administration of blood products (similar to
IV set in all aspect except that the Murphy’s
chamber contains a filter to remove any clots
fro the transfused blood
IV cannula
• The IV canula is colour coded .

• The commonly used IV canula in paediatrics are from No.22 to


26(bigger the gauge number ,smaller is the needle.
• Uses
 Venipuncture for infusion of IV fluids,drugs,blood products.
Insulin syringe
• Parts
 Needle – short and thin an covered with silicon to allow to
pass through skin easily and lessen pain.
 Barrel
 Plunger

• It is used for the subcutaneous injection of insulin and are


calibrated in units rather than ml.
• Syringe available in 30,50 and 100 units capacities.
• The most commonly used preparation of insulin is 100 units
per ml.
• Sites of insulin injection sites

• Use insulin syringe only once.


TUBERCULIN SYRINGE
• IT is a 1 cc syringe with a white piston (plastic syringe) or
metal pistol (glass syringes)
• Uses
 to administer PPD for Mountoux test
 To administer BCG vaccine.
 To administer test dose of drugs such as penicillin
 Provocative testing
 Insulin injection in DM
 Giving small doses for dugs like
gentamycin,phenobarbitn,digoxin
Foleys cathether
• It is self retaining catheter made of latex. It is made to be self
retaining by means of balloon and should be inflated with
saline.
• USES
 To monitor urine output in shock or renal failure..
 To differentiate anuria from retention from
 For incontinence of urine
 To give bladder washes (cystitis)
 For collection of sterile urine for diagnostic purpose.
 To arrest post nasal bleeding in cases o intractable epistaxis.
 To arrest bleeding from oesophageal varices
