CHAPTER 2
Leadership: A Definition
Transformational leadership focuses on inspiring and
enabling people to achieve a shared vision. An
effective transformational leader:
1. Creates an inspiring vision of the future.
2. Motivates and inspires people to engage with
that vision.
3. Manages the delivery of the vision.
4. Coaches and builds a strong, capable team.
1. Creating an Inspiring Vision of the Future
What is a vision?
• A realistic, convincing, and attractive idea of
where you want to be in the future.
Why is vision important?
• Provides direction and sets priorities.
• Acts as a marker for measuring success.
How do leaders create a compelling vision?
• They combine analysis (strategy, planning) with
passion (shared values).
• Use storytelling and relatable language to make
the vision meaningful.
• Paint a vivid picture of what success will look like.
2. Motivating and Inspiring People
A compelling vision is the foundation, but people need
motivation to act on it.
Expectancy Theory:
1. People believe hard work will lead to good
results.
2. They believe good results will lead to valuable
rewards.
→ This expectation motivates effort and
engagement.
How leaders motivate:
• Highlight benefits for both the team and its
customers.
• Communicate the vision often and in engaging
ways.
• Use their expert power – credibility, skills, and
earned respect.
Leverage charisma and other sources of influence (e.g.,
rewards, assignments), but don’t rely solely on them.
3. Managing the Delivery of the Vision
Leaders must ensure that work gets done and the vision
is turned into reality.
This can be done:
 Directly by the leader.
 Indirectly through delegation to capable
managers.
Accountability and effective execution are key.
4. Coaching and Building a Team to Achieve the Vision
Team development is essential for long-term success.
Leaders must:
• Understand team dynamics.
• Ensure members have the right skills and
support.
• Provide regular feedback, training, and coaching.
Developing future leaders is also a part of leadership:
• Spot potential in others.
• Help them grow into leadership roles.
• Build a sustainable and successful future.
The Character of Leadership
Leaders with strong character create positive, lasting
impacts—not just for their organizations, but for society
as a whole. These are known as authentic leaders,
characterized by:
• Consistency between values, ethics, and actions.
• Development of confidence, hope, optimism, and
resilience.
• Widespread respect for their integrity.
To better understand leadership character, researchers
have identified three core dimensions:
A. Universalism
A broad, inclusive concern for the welfare of all people.
It emphasizes respect, fairness, and understanding in
work and life.
Key Attributes:
1. Fairness
Treating everyone equitably and justly.
2. Cooperation
Working effectively in teams—though often
hindered by rigid organizational structures.
3. Compassion
Caring for others’ well-being; in leadership, this
means understanding and addressing employee
needs.
4. Spiritual Respect
Valuing diverse beliefs and personal growth.
Leadership is seen as developing people morally and
emotionally, not just functionally.
B. Transformation
Refers to the process leaders use to achieve positive,
meaningful change. Transformational leaders possess
inner strength and practical skills.
Key Attributes:
1. Courage
Standing firm on principles and making bold
decisions—especially in dynamic or uncertain
environments.
2. Passion
A deep, energetic commitment to excellence.
Passion reflects the soul and values of an
organization.
3. Wisdom
Using experience and knowledge to make sound,
ethical decisions.
4. Competency
Expertise that earns respect and inspires confidence
in others.
5. Self-Discipline
Emotional control, organization, persistence, and
rational decision-making.
"Mastering oneself is the source of true power" –
Lao Tzu.
C. Benevolence
Focused on doing good for others, this dimension
emphasizes moral integrity and care for people over
personal gain.
Key Attributes:
1. Loyalty
Deep commitment to the long-term well-being of
the organization—even when challenges arise.
2. Selflessness
Putting others’ needs before your own for the
greater good.
3. Integrity
Wholeness and consistency between what you say
and what you do.
4. Honesty
Essential for trust—people want leaders they can
believe in and rely on.
