What is Electric Current?

Electric current is the flow of

electric charge through a
conductor
Terminology
Current is the amount of energy that flows. When 1 Coulomb of energy flows through something
in 1 second, it is called 1 Ampere. Measured by ammeter.

Voltage or ‘potential difference’ is the pressure or ‘push’ behind the flow of current. When 1
coulomb of electricity has 1 joule of energy, it will have 1 volt of electrical potential, measured by
voltmeter.

Resistance is the ability of a substance to reduce or ‘slow’ the flow of current.

If an electric voltage of 1 volt maintains a current of 1 Amp through the wire, the resistance of the
wire is 1 Ohm. This is called Ohm’s law

When the flow of current is opposed, the energy gets used or converted to other forms (such as light, heat, or
sound).
Terminology
Electric Energy is the ability to do work, by means of electrical equipment. Electric energy is
measured in joules or kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Electric Power is the rate at which electric energy is used, stored or transferred. Flow of electric
energy through power lines are measured in watts.
Power Distribution System

The part of Power System which distributes electrical power for local use is
known as DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
