Uses of Ultraviolet Radiation

Ultraviolet radiation lies beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum and is primarily sourced from the sun, with applications in sterilization, bank note verification, and enhancing the appearance of laundry. While it aids in Vitamin D production, overexposure can lead to skin damage and cancer. X-rays and gamma rays, with shorter wavelengths and higher energy, are used in medical imaging and cancer treatment but pose risks of cellular damage and cancer from excessive exposure.

ULTRAVIOLET

RADIATION
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION

-lies beyond the violet

end of visible spectrum
-UV waves have shorter
wavelengths than
visible light and carry
more energy
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION

-Sun is the main source of UV

radiation but there are artificial
sources
-UV lamps are used by banks to
check the signature on pass
book. Signature is marked on
passbook with fluorescent ink. It
becomes visible when viewed
under UV lamp; used to identify
fake bank notes
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION

-UV radiation is also used in

sterilizing water from drinking
fountains
-Some washing powder also
contains fluorescent chemicals
which glow in sunlight. It
makes your shirt look whiter
than white in daylight
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION

- UV radiation in sunlight produces

Vitamin D in the skin and gives us
tanning effect. But since UV rays have
high energy, it could be harmful to
some extent
- It could burn the skin and hurt our
eyes
- Overexposure to UV radiation may
cause skin cancer. Suntan or
sunscreen lotions serve as filters to
protect body from ultraviolet radiation
X-RAYS
X-RAYS
- With shorter wavelength but
carries higher energy than UV
- Produced using an x-ray tube.
They are emitted when fast
moving electrons hit a metal
target (discovered by Wilhelm
Conrad Roentgen in 1895)
- Long wavelength x-rays can
penetrate the flesh but not the
bones
X-RAYS
- They are used in x-ray photography to
help doctors to inside the body
- Useful in diagnosing bone fractures and
tumors
- Short wavelength x-rays can penetrate
through metals. They are used in industry
to inspect welded joints for faults
- All x-rays are dangerous because they
can damage healthy living cells
- Too much exposure to x-rays can damage
tissues and cause cancer
GAMMA RAYS
GAMMA RAYS
- Shortest in wavelength and
highest in frequency; carry the
highest amount of energy thus,
they are more dangerous
- Gamma rays are emitted by
stars and some radioactive
substance. They can only be
blocked by lead and thick
concrete
GAMMA RAYS
- They are very strong that they
can kill living cells
- Used to treat cancer through
Radiotherapy
