FROG DISSECTION
KOOKAAKK!!
Objectives: Kookaak!
• Learn the tools used for
dissection.
• Understand the basic steps of
dissecting a frog.
• Identify the key internal
organs.
Introduction:
Wag
po!!
Frogs belong to the class Amphibia. Amphibians
have adaptations for living in terrestrial as well as
aquatic environments. Frogs are among the most
commonly studied organisms in biology. Although
many differences exist between humans and
frogs, the basic body plans are similar. Humans
and frogs both belong to the phylum Chordata. By
studying the anatomy of the frog, you will be
better able to understand your own body.
Tools to be used in dissection
process
• SCALPEL - A type of knife that cuts through skin
and muscle.
• SCISSORS - Used for precise cutting.
• FORCEPS – Helps to hold or lift the parts of the
frog.
• DISSSECTING PINS – Holds the frog open.
• PROBE – Move organs for better viewing.
• TRAY – Holds the frog in place.
• PPE (LAB GOWN, GLOVES, MASK)
STEPS IN DISSECTING A FROG:
1. Preparing the frog
- Place the frog belly-up in the dissecting tray.
- Stretch out its limbs and pin them to the tray to keep
the body still.
2. Making the first cut
- Use the scissors to cut a small opening in the skin
near to the lower belly.
- Carefully cut upward towards to the chest in a straight
line.
- Make two side cut near the arms and leg to loosen the
skin.
3. Opening the body
- Use forceps to gently pull back the skin.
- Pin the skin to the tray so that the organs can visible.
- Repeat the same cuts for the muscle layer underneath.
4. Identifying the organs
Look for the organs like heart, lungs, stomach, intestines,
and liver.
5. Observing and Recording
- Use the probe to move organs carefully.
- Identify the structures and note their functions.
- When finished, clean up properly and carefully dispose the
used materials safely.
