Earth Rotation, Revolution, and Seasons

The document differentiates between rotation and revolution, explaining that rotation is the Earth's spin on its axis causing day and night, while revolution is the Earth's orbit around the sun taking about 365.242 days. It also discusses the concepts of perihelion and aphelion, leap years, solstices, equinoxes, and the seasons in the Philippines, including activities associated with each season. Additionally, it highlights the role of gravity in maintaining Earth's orbit around the sun.

WW # 4.3
Differentiate ROTATION and
REVOLUTION

ROTATIO REVOLUTIO
ROTATION
• It happens when the Earth
spins on its axis.
• It takes about 24 hours for
the Earth to complete one
full rotation.
• It causes day and night.
REVOLUTION

• It happens when the Earth

orbits around the sun.
• It takes about 365. 242
days or one year for the
Earth to complete one full
revolution.
Aphelion and
Perihelion
PERIHELION
• The closest position of
Earth from the sun.
APHELION
• The farthest position of
Earth from the sun.
Why is there a leap
year?
• Leap years are necessary to keep the
calendar in sync with the seasons, which are
Process 1
based on Earth's orbit around the sun.
• It takes Earth about 365.2422 days to orbit
the sun, which is about six hours longer than
a calendar year.
• To make up for this difference, we add an
extra day to the calendar every four years,
which is leap year.
SOLSTICE &
EQUINOX
EQUINOX
• It indicates that the length of daytime is equal to
length of nighttime.

SOLSTICE
• The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, and the
winter solstice is the shortest.
• The winter solstice occurs when the sun is at its lowest
point in the sky at noon.
SOLSTICE &
EQUINOX
• A solstice occurs when the Sun is at its highest
or lowest point in the sky at noon, directly over
the Tropic of Cancer (during the summer solstice)
or the Tropic of Capricorn (during the winter
solstice).
Season

• It is a period of the year that is

distinguished by special climate
conditions.
• It occur because of Earth's tilt and its
revolution around the Sun.
• The four seasons—spring, summer, fall,
and winter.
Seasons in the
Philippines
DRY SEASON
• It occurs from November to May.
• It is the period when there is low rainfall.
• It is marked by scorching heat and clear
skies.
Seasons in the
Philippines
WET SEASON
• It occurs from June to November.
• It is characterized by heavy rainfall
throughout the country.
Seasons in the

• Cooking and baking: Trying new recipes
• Arts and crafts: Painting, drawing, knitting, crafting
• Reading: Catching up on books
• Spa days: Relaxing with self-care activities
How does gravity affect Earth’s
motion around the sun?

Gravity, specifically the Sun's gravitational

pull, is the primary force that keeps Earth in
orbit around the Sun, constantly pulling it
towards the Sun and maintaining its circular
path around it; without this gravitational
force, Earth would fly off into space in a
straight line due to its inertia.
