AFL 2
What is obedience, and how does it differ from
compliance in terms of social influence?
Ans: Obedience refers to the act of following direct
orders or instructions from an authority figure, often
in situations where the individual may not
personally agree with the directive.
Compliance, on the other hand, involves agreeing
to a request or demand from another person, but
unlike obedience, compliance doesn't necessarily
come from an authority figure.
Obedience involves following authority (e.g., a manager
instructing an employee to complete a task).
Compliance involves agreeing to a peer’s request, often
without the presence of authority (e.g., agreeing to attend a
social event because a friend asked)
REFLECTION QUESTION
• Elizabeth is watching football when she is told
by her father to wash the dishes. She
immediately does as her father has instructed
her to. Is Elizabeth conforming or showing
obedience?
EXTENDED LEARNING
• How do different compliance techniques (like
the foot-in-the-door and door-in-the-face
techniques) differ in terms of how they
influence behavior? Which of these
techniques do you think would be most
effective in different social contexts, such as
sales, politics, or interpersonal relationships?
