Meaning of Values
• Values are fundamental beliefs and principles that
guide how we think , act and make
decisions .
•They help us differentiate between right and
wrong , shaping our character and influencing
our relationships with others.
•Values play a crucial role in personal growth
and ethical decision – making .
•Values come from our family, culture ,
experiences and education .

1. Personal and Subjective
Values differ from person to person based on their experiences and beliefs. What one person
considers may not be the same for someone else.
Example : One person may value independence, while another may prioritize family bonds.
2. Dynamic
Values are not fixed , they change over time as people grow , learn and experience new things.
Example : A teenager may prioritize fun and adventure but as they grow older , they may start
valuing responsibility.
3. Guide Behavior and Decision-Making
Values act as a moral compass, helping individuals make choices in life . They influence how
a person interacts with others.
Example : If honesty is a core value, a person will avoid lying even when faced with a difficult
situation .
4. Learned from society and culture
Values are not inherited but learned through family, education , religion and social
interactions. Different culture and traditions influence what people consider important.
Example : In some cultures , respecting elders is a core value, while in others,
independence are emphasized.
5. Prioritized Differently
People rank their values based on what they consider most important. Some values are
given more importance than others, depending on personal beliefs.
Example : A person who values success over family may spend more time at work ,
while
another who values relationships may prioritize family time.
6. Universal and Cultural Values
Some values are universal , meaning they are respected and followed worldwide (e.g.
truth, love , kindness).
Example : Helping others is a universal value , but the way kindness may differ across
culture.
7. Influence on society
Values help maintain order and harmony in society by guiding ethical and moral behavior.
Example : A society that values justice ensure fair treatment for all its citizen.
8. Stable but flexible
While values provide stability in life, they can be adjusted or modified when needed.
Example : Someone who values wealth may later realize that happiness and health are more
important.
