MULTIMEDIA FILES
A file that is capable of holding two or more multimedia
elements (text, images, audio, video and animations.) A
still graphic (image) can created in a drawing or paint
program, from a scanned item or from a digital or video
camera. It can be stored in various file formats such
as .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .bmp, .tif or .tiff. Audio files created on
the computer are stored in formats such as .au, .mov
or .mid. Movie files (animation or video) are stored in
formats such as .avi, .mov, or .mpg or mpeg. Multimedia
software develop an interactive application. Multimedia
software, such as RealPlayer and Media Player, is
available on disc (CD or DVD), over the internet or a LAN.
MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS
• A presentation program is a multimedia software application that
lets you combine text, graphics, animation (movement), tables,
sound and video into a professional presentation to communicate
a message, idea or any other information to a group.
• The presentation can be viewed as slides called a slide show. This
is displayed on a large monitor or on a projected screen.
• Examples of presentation programs include Corel Presentations,
StarOffice Express, Open Office Impress and Microsoft PowerPoint.
• We will be using PowerPoint to create presentations.
• It is a presentation that enables you to create professional-looking
presentation quickly.
• You can use PowerPoint to produce slides shows, web pages,
handouts, notes pages slide printouts, a presentation outline as
a text-only document, a presentation as a movie file or, a slide
saved as a graphic. An application such as Microsoft Windows
Media Player can be used to play back multimedia movies.
• Power point is easy to learn as it is part of Microsoft Office suite.
• The user interface follows the conventions used in other Office
applications, such as Word, Excel and Access.
• Microsoft Office applications share common commands and
features such as the ribbon and the contextual menus and tabs.
You can apply what you already know from the other
applications to PowerPoint.
• The Ribbon is a panel that appears across the
top of the window. It gives the user access to
all the options available in the application.
Contextual menus and tabs appear when an
object is selected. They contain information or
options specific to that kind of object. Fro
instance, when an image is selected, the
contextual tab called Picture displays.
Value enhancing to physically challenged pupils
• Multimedia presentation help physically
challenged pupils to access the curriculum and
learning. One of the advantages of using
multimedia is to convey information quickly and
effectively to all pupils. This keeps them
interested in learning. However, multimedia
presentations need to be specifically adaptable to
suit physically challenged pupils. Presentation
software assist physically challenged pupils in the
following ways:
• Interactive multimedia presentations that have illustrations,
animations, videos and sound effects can enhance and
consolidate learning for physically challenged pupils because
of their multi-sensory approach.
• Interactive multimedia presentations encourage pupils to
interact with the subject matter.
• Presentation software that is rich in graphics can assist pupils
who are hearing impaired.
• Interactive multimedia presentation that have large fonts,
contrasting font colours and background colours and clear font
styles can make the reading materials more accessible to
visually impaired pupils.
A combination of visual and audio cues can help pupils who
are physically challenged.
A variety of cues and stimuli to retain interest and excitement
in people with learning disabilities.
Simulations and interactive material provide and effective
way of bringing the outside world to pupils who are
physically challenged in motor movement. Pictures and
animations makre scientific information clearer.
Voice recognition software allows voice commands to access
programs and menus as well as turn speech into text. Voice
recognition is ideal for visually impaired pupils who cannot
write clearly or pupils who do not have good motor control.

including text, graphics, videos, audio or animation.
There are many benefits to an appropriately developed
presentation.

attention by stimulating vision, hearing, emotions and
imagination. They can be used to bring a subject to life.
• Multimedia presentations can be effectively used by
organizations and businesses to express ideas.
• Multimedia caters for different learning styles in the
classroom.
• Interactive multimedia presentations can be created
to engage audiences.
• Complex concepts can be represented in simple,
interesting ways using multimedia aids. For example,
statistical data can presented in a multimedia
presentation on a graph. The graph can easily be
interpreted, and relationships or trends deducted,
ideas reinforce or complicated concepts clarified
• Multimedia presentation can easily be changed
and adapted for physically challenged.

and distributed.

information is easily controlled and presented.

Planning a Presentation
• Practical and ethical guidelines when
designing a presentation.
• Identify the critical information for your
presentation.
• The tone used to get the message across
should differ according to the target audience.
• In a large room, you may need a projector and
a microphone. Text legibility and background
colours are also important.
• The presentation must be appropriate to the
age group.
• The audience will lose interest if there are too
many explanations of familiar subject content.
• Consider the value of using pictures rather than
text.
• Do not use too many colours of effects as this can
distract the audience.
• Plan the length of the presentation in line with the
time available.
• Make sure the presentation makes sense and that
slides run in logical sequence.
• Consider the cultural background of the audience
and adjust the content accordingly.
• Consistent slide design throughout the
presentation makes the message much clearer.
• Limit the number of fonts used in the
presentation to three. Keep the font consistent
throughout the presentation.
• Use no more than six bullets per page. Bullets
should be short ideas, not complete sentences.
• Do not type everything in capital letters. This is
called SCREAMING and distracts the audience.
