DIGITAL SELF
• The digital self is the aspect of the self that
is expressed or shared with others through
online interaction the internet, specifically in
social networking sites. On such sites, users
normally disclose personal information such
as their name, age, birthdate, address and
contact details. Some users also provide
very personal information about themselves
such as their like and dislikes, hobbies,
favorite food, favorite movies, places they
have visited, relationship status, thoughts
and feelings and important events in their
lives. This sharing of personal information on
social networking sites may be related to the
strong desire of adolescents for social
approval and acceptance.
SELECTIVE SELF-PRESENTATION AND
IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT
• According to Ervin Goffman, self-
presentation is the “process of
controlling how one is perceived by
other people” and is the key to
relationship inception and
development. To construct positive
images, individual selectively
provide information about them and
carefully cater this information in
response to others feedback.
SELECTIVE SELF-PRESENTATION AND
IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT
• Anything posted online should be
considered “public” no matter what
“privacy” settings are. Let us say, a
student wrote online about how much
he hated another student in school,
and started bullying him online. Does it
matter if the student said, “Well, this is
my personal account”? Even if the
student wrote it in a “private” account,
it can become public with a quick
screen capture and shared with the
world
SELECTIVE SELF-
PRESENTATION
AND IMPRESSION
MANAGEMENT
• Personal identity is the
interpersonal level of
self which differentiates
the individual as unique
from others, while
social identity is the
level of self whereby
the individual is
identified by his or her
group memberships.

NEEDED EXTENDED SELF DUE TO SHARING
• It takes only a moment of surfing the web to realize that the Internet is a
cornucopia of information, entertainment, images, films, and music—
mostly all free for accessing, downloading, and sharing with others.
• Sharing itself is not new and has arguably been around as long as
humankind. But digital devices help us share more, as well as more
broadly, than ever before.
NEEDED EXTENDED
SELF DUE TO SHARING
• For those active on Facebook, it is
likely that their social media friends
know more than their immediate
families about their daily activities,
connections, and thoughts. Facebook
is now a key part of self presentation
for one sixth of humanity. This has
led some participants and
researchers to become concerned
with actively managing identity and
reputation and to warn against the
phenomenon of “oversharing.”
