LADDERS
14/04/2025 JAYPEE GREENS FIRE DEPARTMENT 2
Introduction
Ladders are very important in Fire Service & Rescue
work. The fire unit is considered incomplete without
a ladder.
Uses of Ladders:
• To save life
• To reach up to high Building/floors
• To get into deep places
• Too make bridge between two buildings
• To use as a stretcher
Types of Ladders
MANUAL LADDERS MECHANICAL LADDERS
1. SINGLE LADDERS ( FIRST FLOOR LADDERS) 1. TURN TABLE LADDER
2. EXTENSION LADDER 2. AERIAL LADDER PLATFORM ( HYDRAULIC
3. HOOK LADDER PLATFORM)
4. ROPE LADDER
5. ESCAPE LADDER

Acceptance Test of Extension ladder
1. Deflection Test of Extension ladder
PITCHING OF THE LADDERS:
[Link] should be pitched in such a way that the little space should be on the right
side and more space will be on the lift side.
[Link] of the ladder should be well above the window as it is only easier to step on or
step off, normally four rounds should be above the object when it is pitched and fifth
round should be parallel to object
[Link] the window in narrow, ladder should be pitched on the wall preferably to the right
side, not on the still.
[Link] should be pitched at a 'safe angle' in which the distance of the ladder from
the wall should be between ¼ and ⅕ of the extending height of the ladder.
[Link] ladder should be straight.
TAKING LEG LOCK:
How to secure yourself on a ladder while keeping
your hands free:
1. Grasp an appropriate round with both hands.
2. Place one leg through the ladder over the second
round above that on which your standing.
3. Bend you leg using the inside of your knee and
back of your calf to lock.
4. If possible, bring your other foot back through
the round, placing the toes under the round
immediately above the one on which the other
foot makes the lock, to the left or right.
CARE AND MAINTANCE:
1. Ladder should not drag or drop on the ground.
2. All types of ladder should be used regularly at drill in order to Keep them in shape.
3. Ladder should not be exposed to extreme temperature( sun and rain).
4. Ladder should be stored in one position to avoid warping.
5. Ladder should be kept in vertical position or flat while stored.
6. No weight should be placed on ladder when it is stored.
7. Constructional joint should be kept water resistance by close fitting.
8. All moving part should be examined and lubricated timely as required.
9. All nuts and bolts should be checked timely and tightened.
10. The extending line (Rope) should be checked for any sign of wear and tear.
11. Metal parts of ladder should not be painted.
12. Clean the ladder by soap solution (liquid soap) and with soft steel wool
MECHANICAL LADDERS
AERIEL LADDER PLATFORM (ALP)
The aerial ladder platform shall have two/three booms
system. The booms shall be made of high tensile
strength steel. The first boom may have telescopic
extensions. The 2nd boom shall have vertical movement
of 180º.All movements shall be electro hydraulically
servo controlled at optional speed from both the control
panels by means of joysticks.
The working cage shall be kept leveled horizontally with
respect to any position of the booms. The cage shall be
capable of being turned 45º on either side from the
centre position. The movement shall be powered by
hydraulic cylinder.
TURNTABLE LADDER
A turntable ladder (TL) is used for forcible entry, ventilation,
search and rescue, and to gain access to fires occurring at
height using a large telescopic ladder, where conventional
ladders carried on conventional appliances might not reach. The
name is derived from the fact that the large ladder is mounted
on a turntable on the back of a truck chassis, allowing it to pivot
around a stable base. To increase its length, the ladder is
telescopic.

fire victims at height.

firefighting (elevated master stream)
[Link] a platform from which tasks such
as ventilation or overhaul can be executed.
[Link] can be used for mass rescue
