Energy Flow Models in Ecosystems

The document discusses the Energy Flow Model in ecosystems, emphasizing the principles of thermodynamics that govern energy transfer through food chains. It outlines the unidirectional flow of energy from solar radiation to producers, herbivores, and carnivores, highlighting energy loss at each trophic level. Various types of energy flow models, including single-channel and Y-shaped models, are also described.

Types of Energy flow Model.
Single-Channel Energy flow models.
 Introduction
 The chemical energy of food is the main
source of energy required by all the living
organisms.
 The energy is transmitted to different trophic
level along with the food chain.
 The Energy flow is based on two different
Laws of Thermodynamics.
 Principles
1) First law of thermodynamics:- According to
this law, energy can be transformed from one
form into another, it can neither be created
nor destroyed.

2) Second law of thermodynamics:- According to

this law, during the process of transformation
of energy , some of the transformed energy is
diffused from the ecosystem in dispersed form.
 What is Energy flow model ?
 The principles of food chain and energy flow
through an ecosystem can be schematized by
various flow diagrams or Energy flow models.
 The total assimilated energy in the form of
food & its efficiency of assimilation .
 The loss of energy through
respiration ,heat ,excreation , etc.
 Energy flow in Ecosystem
 For all most all organisms on earth , the
primary source of energy is Solar Energy.

 Energy flow in the ecosystem is one of the

major factors that support the survival of such
a great number of organisms.
 Energy flow model………
 Energy flow in Ecosystem is always Unidirectional or one way i.e.

 Solar radiation Producers Herbivores

Carnivores.

 At each trophi level there occurs progressive decrease in the

energy.

 Which is mainly due to loss of energy as heat in metabolic

reactions & also some of the energy is utilized at each trophic
level.

activities.

 Types of energy flow models:-
1) Single-Channel Energy Flow
Models/Diagrams.

2) Y-shaped or 2-channel energy flow

models/diagrams.

3) Universal model/diagram.
 Single-channel energy flow model

 The flow of energy take place in an

uniderectional manner through green Plant to
Herbivores to Carnivores.
 Both laws , I & ll laws of thermodynamics are
follwed here.
 At each level , progressive decrease in energy.
 It outflow the energy & at each level energy is
energy is lost .
