2G to LTE Reselection Optimization

The document discusses the activation of the 2G-LTE reselection feature and Fast Return to LTE, which allows user equipment to switch directly from 2G to LTE without going through 3G, improving user experience by reducing delays. The benefits include significantly faster reselection times from 2G to 4G, with results showing a reduction from approximately 58 seconds to about 0.04 seconds. The trials indicate positive outcomes for both features, enhancing overall network efficiency and user satisfaction.

FEATURE Introduction

• Introduction
Currently re-selection from 2G to 4G is via 3G network i.e. if UE is going out of 2G
coverage, it will first search and latch on 3G network and then from 3G to 4G. But in areas
with bad 3G but good 4G coverage, this scenario can result in annoying delays or outages
for end user. In order to avoid such scenarios from happening in network, re-selection from
2G to LTE would be activated. With the new setting user equipment will be able to latch
onto higher priority LTE layers easily and more quickly, resulting in better end user
experience.
• Fast Return to LTE, enables BSS to send MS back to LTE immediately after call release in
GSM. This was targeted to reduce time spent in GSM as well as signalling reduction for LTE
capable terminals.

Ericsson Internal | 2018-02-21

BENEFIT
 When 2G to LTE reselection feature is not activated, The UE will be able to re-select the
4G network only via 3G. the 2G-LTE re-selection procedure will take around 1 min: this is
due to the fact that on top of the reselection the UE has to execute different procedures
(e.g.: Neighbor cell measurements, multiple LA/RA)
 The Fast Return to LTE after Call Release enables BSS to send MS back to LTE
immediately after call release in GSM. This was targeted to reduce time spent in GSM as
well as signalling reduction for LTE capable terminals

ANALYSIS: Feature desired behavior

LTE reselection:
UE Will reselect LTE when:
RSRP>-112dbm (QRXLEVMINE(-122) + HPRIOTHR (10))
Fast return to LTE:

Release :
Minimal allowed RSRP = -112 (EFDDMROFF (-122) + EFDDRSRPLEV

Conclusion

— The trial of the feature 2G to LTE reselection gave good results in terms of the overall
time needed to complete a cell reselection from 2G to 4G.
— The trial of the feature Fast Return to LTE after Call Release gave good results in terms
of the time needed to complete a cell reselection from 2G to 4G after the call is
released in 2G
