INTRODUCTION TO DIGESTANTS
•DEFINITION: Digestants are substances that help improve the process of
digestion by aiding in the breakdown of food.
•Function: they enhance the action of digestive enzymes or act as artificial
enzymes.
•EXAMPLES:
• Enzyme supplements (e.g., papain, bromelain)
• Betaine HCl
• Ginger (in certain forms)
•PURPOSE: Commonly used for digestive issues such as indigestion, bloating, and
low stomach acid.
INTRODUCTION TO CARMINATIVES
•DEFINITION: Carminatives are substances that relieve gas and bloating by
soothing the gastrointestinal tract and promoting the expulsion of gas.
•FUNCTION: They reduce discomfort by relaxing the muscles of the intestines and
preventing or relieving gas.
•EXAMPLES:
• Peppermint
• Fennel
• Cumin
• Cardamom
•PURPOSE: Often used in herbal teas or as ingredients in digestive aids to
alleviate bloating, cramps, and indigestion.
MECHANISMS OF ACTION
•DIGESTANTS:
• Stimulate enzyme production or provide enzymes to break down
complex food particles.
• Help increase nutrient absorption and ease digestion.
•CARMINATIVES:
• Relax the smooth muscles in the digestive tract.
• Promote the release of trapped gas, easing bloating and discomfort.
• Often have a mild anti-inflammatory effect.
BENEFITS, USES, AND CONCLUSION
•DIGESTANTS:
• Help those with digestive disorders (e.g., IBS, acid reflux, low stomach acid).
• Promote better nutrient absorption.
•CARMINATIVES:
• Effective for managing bloating, cramps, and flatulence.
• Common in herbal and over-the-counter digestive products.
•CONCLUSION: Both digestive aids have complementary roles, enhancing
digestion and comfort, but should be used with care, especially when combined
with other medications.
