RIVER REJUVENATION
WHAT IS RIVER REJUVENATION
River rejuvenation is the renewal of
erosive activities of a river
CAUSES
A) CHANGE IN BASE LEVEL
The lowest level at which a river
erodes its bed is called a base level
Rejuvenation resulting is called
dynamic rejuvenation
DROP IN SEA LEVELS
This occurs between the old and the new
mouths causing the river to start to move
swiftly
The rivers mouth moves further
seawards
Vertical erosion resumes extending back
to the flood plains
UPLIFT OF A SECTION OF LAND OF
ALONG THE RIVERS COURSE
A section of land along a river`s course
is uplifted resulting in faulting or folding
The river will flow swiftly and undercut
through the uplifted section, since the
gradient will be increased
AN ANTACEDENT GORGE IS FORMED
The river starts to undercut more
vigorously than before since there will
be unequal sinking of water near a rivers
course which causes the downstream to
sink more than the upstream .
An increased gradient occurs causing
the river to flow swiftly
INCREASE IN RIVERS DISCHARGE
This results is the static rejuvenation
High precipitation increases rivers
discharge and this causes high rate of
erosion which causes high rate of
erosion which causes the river to
undercut more vigorously
CHANGE IN ROCK
STRUCTURE
A river passes a resistant rock and starts
flowing over a less resistant rock
The river starts to undercut into the
softer rocks
