BEHAVIOR CHANGE ACTIVITIES
Multiple channels and various methods reinforce knowledge and practice

support
3. Home visits

ACTION-ORIENTED GROUPS

talks
‣ Group/health talks communicate ideas or convey information to a group
‣ In action-oriented group, participants are encouraged to personalize the
information and to try something new or different (an action)
‣ Health talks effective for giving information but do not necessarily lead to
changes in behavior
‣ Apply the steps:
OBSERVE THINK TRY ACT

๏ Used to encourage group participants to reflect on and

personalize their experiences
๏ Learn from them and make a decision to change behavior
4
BREASTFEEDING AND NUTRITION SUPPORT GROUPS

‣ The group allows participants to:

๏ Share infant feeding information and personal experience
๏ Mutually support each other through their own experience
๏ Strengthen or modify certain attitudes and practices
๏ Learn from each other
‣ Enables participants to reflect on their experience, doubts, difficulties,
popular beliefs, myths, information, and infant feeding practices

5
BREASTFEEDING AND NUTRITION SUPPORT GROUPS
‣ Not LECTURES or CLASSES
‣ Participants play an active role
‣ Focus on the importance of one-to-one communication
‣ Sitting arrangement allows all participants to have eye-to-eye contact
‣ Group size varies from 3 to 12
‣ Facilitated by an experienced Facilitator/Mother who listens and guides the
discussion
‣ Open allows anyone who is interested to attend
‣ Facilitator and the participants decide the length of the meeting and
frequency of the meetings

6
HOME VISITS
‣ Allows the community worker to assess home and family situations in order to
provide necessary health related support:
๏ Greeting and introduction
๏ Establish comfortable setting with caregiver
๏ Building confidence and giving support skills
๏ Listening and learning counseling skills
๏ IYCF-3 Step Counseling: Assess, Analyze, Act
๏ During the Assess Step (ask, listen, and observe), observe the home
situation: Is there food? Are there feeding bottles?
๏ Can use appropriate Counseling Cards

knowledge and practice

An action-oriented group encourages participants to reflect,
learn, and make decisions
