Soil Permeability Analysis and Calculations

The document describes a series of calculations related to soil permeability using different soil specimens in a constant head flow setup. It includes determining the height (h) in the setup, calculating the equivalent coefficient of permeability for stratified soil, and analyzing the time for head drop in a falling head permeameter with multiple soil layers. The coefficients of permeability for the soils and their respective dimensions are provided for the calculations.

1.

Three soil specimens (Soil 1, Soil 2 and Soil 3), each 150 mm long and
100 mm diameter are placed in series in a constant head flow set-up as
shown in the figure. Suitable screens are provided at the boundaries of the
specimens to keep them intact. The values of coefficient of permeability of
Soil 1, Soil 2 and Soil 3 are 0.01, 0.003 and 0.03 cm/sec, respectively.
Calculate the value of h in the setup.

2. Calculate the equivalent coefficient of permeability of given stratified soil
(Figure 1). Note that all dimensions are in cm.
= 3.5× cm/sec = 10.5× cm/sec

= 7.0× cm/sec = 5.25× cm/sec

3. In a falling head permeameter, the sample used is 20 cm long having a
cross-sectional area of 24 . Calculate the time for a drop of head from 25 to
12 cm if the cross-sectional area of the stand pipe is 2 . The sample of soil is
made of three layers. The thickness of the first layer from the top 8 cm and
has a value of = 2× cm/sec, the second layer of thickness 8 cm has = 5*
cm/s and the bottom layer thickness 4 cm has = 7* cm/sec. Assume that the
flow is taking place perpendicular to the layers.
