the crowns of both maxillary and mandibular
teeth on one image.
Also known as interproximal technique
Called bitewing because of a film that has a wing
for patient to bite on.
Instruments
Rinn XCP – eXtension Cone paralleling
Increase accuracy of intra-oral images
Ensures that sensor is perpendicular to x ray beam
consists of : 1. bite block
2. indicator rod
3. aiming ring
Rinn xcp instruments
INDICATIONS
Detection of carious lesions
Monitoring progression of dental caries
Assessment periodontal status
Assessment of existing restorations
Preparation
Infection control procedures to be completed
Patient to be seated
Remove spectacles and dentures
Adjust the head rest to support pt’s head, occlusal plane horizontal
Explain procedure to pt
Place lead apron and thyroid collar on pt
Mount rinn instruments and sensor
Sensor should be positioned horizontally on a holder
Carefully insert the holder/ bite block on the lingual sulcus parallel to the teeth
Ask patient to bite on bite block
Position machine to aiming ring, so that central
ray/beam is perpendicular to sensor
Technique
NB : X4 bitewings on adults
2 on each side.
x2 bitewings on children
Ideal image quality
The image should have acceptable definition with no distortion or
blurring
The image should include from the mesial surface of the first premolar
to the distal surface of second molar – if the third molars are erupted,
then the 7/8 contact should be included
The maxillary and mandibular alveolar crests should be visible
There should be no overlap on the interproximal surfaces of the teeth
Image should be free from errors
