Biodiversity and Species Conservation Insights

The document discusses biodiversity and nature conservation, focusing on species classification through morphological, biological, and DNA concepts. It provides statistics on the number of species in flora and fauna in Bangladesh, highlighting the diversity of plants and animals. The document emphasizes that biodiversity is about maintaining natural ecosystems rather than preserving all species artificially.

Morphological & Biological species

Species (L: specere=to look; species=appearance, beauty, kind) a class of things having few
characteristics. A category in the classification of living organisms consisting of single
individuals capable of exchanging genes or capable of inbreeding.
Morphological species concepts (MSC) species differ if they have different form. However, some
species have richly varied forms. In some species, males and females look entirely different.
Other species have many color forms (Flowers)
Biological species concepts (BSC): species differ if they can not interbreed. However, many
distinct species do inbreed, but their offspring is less successful, some time sterile. Often
species who could interbreed, are prevented from doing so, because they are isolated from
one another.
DNA species concepts(DSC): species are distinguished by the differences in their DNA (Human
and bonob chimpansee DNA differ only by 0.013)
Sibling species: even though species look alike, they do not interbreed and are truly separate
species
Hybrid species: species can be crossed to produce a new species, which is often sterile. If hybrids
between two similar species can not be found in the wild, they must be biologically separate
species.

FLORA & FAUNA

Bangladesh supports 5000 species of angiosperms of which 300

species are being cultivated and medicinal plants expected to
exceeds 5000 species, 224 timber species and 130 species of
indigenous fiber plants.
• The IUCN Bangladesh data book (2000) has described 266
species of inland fishes, 442 marine fishes, 22 amphibians,
109 inland reptiles, 17 marine reptiles, 388 resident birds, 240
migratory birds, 110 inland mammals , as well as 3 species of
marine mammals in Bangladesh.
Biodiversity
Thus biodiversity is not about preserving all
species in an artificial way, but about a world
or part thereof, unchanged by human beings.
