FORCE and MOTION
Lesson 1
DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
I. Define force.
II. Describe the effects of force on
different objects.
What is FORCE?
Force is a push or pull that can affect objects. It is
also an interaction between two objects – the one
being pulled or pushed and the one doing the pulling
and pushing.
What is FORCE?
Forces can be small or large. The measurement of how
large or small a force is called magnitude. A force also
has a direction. It tells where the force is going. The
unit of force is newton (N), named after the
scientist Sir Isaac Newton. Force can be
measured by using the spring balance.
Forces can be balanced or unbalanced.
Balanced force is
demonstrated by
stationary objects.
There is no motion
when objects are
stationary.
When do you observe unbalanced forces? A tug-of-war
game, if the forces are balanced, nothing happens. But
if one force is greater, the players move in the direction
of the greater force.
TWO KINDS OF FORCE
Contact Force and Noncontact
Force
Contact Force
Contact Force is a force happened between objects that touch
TYPES OF FORCE
that are
EXAMPLE OF CONTACT FORCE
Example of Contact Force
FRICTIONAL FORCE is a
force that opposes the
movement between two
surfaces in contact.
Lubricant is a substance, such as oil that reduces
friction when applied as a surface coating to moving
parts.
Two types of FRICTION
Static Friction occurs when Kinetic Friction occurs if there
there is no change in motion of is a change in motion of a body.
a body or object. Objects that Moving objects have kinetic
are at rest have static friction. friction.
Example of Contact Force
TENSION FORCE is a
pulling force exerted by
an object when it is
stretched, such as when
you stretch a rubber
band.
Example of Contact Force
NORMAL FORCE is the
force exerted by an
object that is
perpendicular to the
surface of the object.
Example of Contact Force
AIR RESISTANCE FORCE
is a force that opposes
the motion of an object
through the air.
Example of Contact Force
APPLIED FORCE is a
force that is applied
to an object by a
person or another
object
Example of Contact Force
SPRING FORCE is a
contact force and a
restoring force that is
also conservative. There
is an interaction
between the spring and
the object attached to
it.
Noncontact Force
Noncontact Force is a force that act on an object
without touching or contact with an object.
Magnetism and gravity are examples of
noncontact force.
Examples of Noncontact Force
Examples of Noncontact Force
Gravitational Force is a
force of attraction
between the given body
and the Earth itself.
Examples of Noncontact Force
Electrical Force is a type
of interaction between
charged particles that
can be attractive or
repulsive.
Examples of Noncontact Force
Magnetic Force is an
attraction or repulsion
that arises between
electrically charged
particles because of
their motion.
OTHER TYPES OF FORCES
Elastic Force occurs
when a materials is
stretched or
compressed
OTHER TYPES OF FORCES
Compression Force is a
pushing force exerted by a
material when it is
squeezed or compressed.
The size of a compression
force exerted by a material
is equal to the size of the
force that compresses the
material.
OTHER TYPES OF FORCES
Centripetal Force is a
force that tends to drive
a thing inward toward a
center of rotation. It
keeps the object
moving in a circular
path.
EFFECTS OF
FORCES ON
THINGS
Force can change
the shape and size
of objects.
Force can move
things.
Force can change
the speed and
direction of an
object.
