Self-Inflating Balloon
2
2
What are we trying to find out?
Can the amount the balloon fills-up be
contained by the amount of vinegar or
baking soda?
3
What do you predict will happen?
Gas (carbon dioxide) will move into the
balloon and it will be inflated.
4
Experiment
- One small empty
plasticMaterial:
soda or water
bottle
- 1/2 cup of vinegar
- Small balloon
- Baking soda
- Funnel or piece of
paper
5
5
How does it work?
The baking soda and the vinegar
create an ACID-BASE reaction
and the two chemicals work
together to create a gas, (carbon
dioxide) Gasses need a lot of
room to spread out and the
carbon dioxide starts to fill the
bottle, and then moves into the
balloon to inflate it.
6
What to do?
1. Carefully pour the vinegar
into the bottle.
2. Loosen up the balloon by
stretching it a few times.
3. Use funnel to fill it a bit
more than half way with
baking soda
7
What to do?
4. Put the neck of the
balloon all the way over
the neck of the bottle
without letting any baking
soda into the bottle.
8
What to do ?
5. Lift the balloon up so that the
baking soda falls from the
balloon into the bottle and
mixes with the vinegar. Watch
the fizz-inflator at work!
9
Independent and dependent
variable
-Independent variable
The color and size of the
balloon.
-Dependent variable:
A chemical reaction that will
make a balloon inflate itself
10
What happen during the experiment?
When we mixed vinegar and baking soda
together they will create carbon dioxide .
The gas will cause the balloon to inflate.
11
Conclusion
Vinegar and baking soda will made the balloon blow
up.
