4.1. Introduction to Cast Iron

Ferrous alloys with carbon contents above 2.14 wt.%

Liquid in the temperature range 1150˚C and 1300 ˚C, considerably lower than for
steel.

They are easily melted and amenable to casting.

Since they are very brittle, casting is the most convenient fabrication technique.
