Expanding and

Factorising Expressions
Objective: Simplify, expand, and factorise
expressions.

Key Vocabulary:
1- Expand (Раскрыть скобки)
2- Factorise (Факторизовать)
3- Highest Common Factor (Наибольший
общий делитель - HCF).
Quick Check
Simplify these expressions:
Group 1: 3x + 4x

Group 2: 2(x + 5)

Group 3: 5x - 2(3x - 4)

Think-Pair-Share: Discuss answers with your partner.

Expanding Brackets -
What Does It Mean?
Expanding brackets means multiplying each term
inside the bracket by the term outside.
Example: 2(x + 5) = 2x + 10.

Rules for Signs:

(+ × + = +) Multiplying term of the same signs = +
(- × - = +) Multiplying term of the same signs = +
(+ × - = -) Multiplying term of the different signs = -
(- × + = -) Multiplying term of the different signs = -
Expanding Brackets
Group 1: 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12

Group 2: 2x(3x + 4) = 6x² + 8x

Group 3: -y(4y² - 3y) = -4y³ + 3y²

Factorisation - Finding
the HCF
Factorising means taking out the highest common
factor and rewriting with brackets.
Example: 6x² + 8x = 2x(3x + 4)

Finding the HCF:

Example: 10x² = 2 × 5 × x × x
Example: 15x⁴ = 3 × 5 × x × x × x × x
HCF = 5x²
Guided Practice
Expanding Brackets:
Group 1: 3(x + 2)
Group 2: 2x(4x - 5)
Group 3:

Factorising:
Group 1: 9y + 15
Group 2: - 12x² - 8x
Group 3: - 14x²y - 21xy²
Check
Expand:
1. 4(x - 3)
2. 2y(3y + 5)

Factorise:
1. 10x + 25
2. 3x + 6y - 9z

Plenary:
- Discuss: What is the opposite of expanding?
- Why do we factorise in algebra?
