Characteristics of Normal Distribution

Normal distribution, also known as Gaussian Distribution, is a key statistical tool for making inferences about populations based on sample characteristics. The normal curve is bell-shaped, symmetrical, and has an area of one under it, with mean, median, and mode being equal. Its shape can vary depending on the mean and standard deviation.

NORMAL

DISTRIBUTION
OBJECTIVES:
• Define normal distribution;
• Solve for the areas under the normal
curve;
• Sketch the normal curve correctly; and
• Manifest speed and accuracy in solving
the activity

2
NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
• A powerful tool in statistics.
• Allows to make inferences about the whole
population based on some characteristics of
a sample.
• Also known as the Gaussian Distribution
because the proponent was Carl Friedrich
Gauss

3
The most important probability distribution in
statistics is the normal distribution.

x
A normal distribution is a continuous
probability distribution for a random variable, x.
The graph of a normal distribution is called the
normal curve.

4
NORMAL DISTRIBUTION CURVE or
NORMAL CURVE
• A bell-shaped curve
• Lies entirely above the horizontal axis
• Symmetrical, unimodal, and asymptotic to
horizontal axis
• The area between the curve and the horizontal axis
is exactly equal to 1.

5
CHARACTERISTICS OF A NORMAL
CURVE
1. The mean, median, and mode are equal.
2. The normal curve is bell-shaped and symmetric about the
mean.
3. The total area under the curve is equal to one.
4. The normal curve approaches, but never touches the x-
axis as it extends farther and farther away from the
mean.
5. The bell curve varies in shape depending on the mean
and on the standard deviation. It can be narrow or wide. It
can be tall or short.
