Understanding Probability Basics

The document provides an overview of probability, defining key terms such as experiment, sample space, outcome, and event. It explains the Fundamental Principle of Counting and introduces methods like tree diagrams to systematically list outcomes. Several examples illustrate how to calculate possible outcomes in various scenarios, including combinations of snacks and forming numbers.

Probability
 is a branch of Mathematics that deals with
calculating the likelihood of a certain
event’s occurrence.
Terminologies used in
Probability
Experiment – a process by which an
outcome is obtained.
Sample Space – the set of all possible
outcomes.
Outcome – a single result of a
experiment.
Event – is a collection of two or more
outcomes of an experiment.

Fundamental Principle of
Counting
 if one thing can occur in m ways, and a
second thing can occur in n ways, and a third
thing can occur in p ways, and so on, then the
sequence of things can occur in
m × n × p × … ways.
Tree Diagram
 is a method used to list all the possible
outcomes of a certain event in a systematic
way.
Illustration:

Tossing a coin
Sample Space of two dice
Example 1:
A convenience store offers the following choices for
their snacks. Suppose you choose a sandwich and a
drink. How many possible outcomes are there?
Sandwich Drinks
Hamburger Juice
Chicken Softdrink
Hotdog
Example 2:
How many two digit numbers can be formed using
the digits 1, 2, 3, and 4:
a. If repetition is allowed?
b. If repetition is not allowed?
Example 3:
How many two digit odd numbers can be formed
using the digits 5, 6, 7, and 8:
a. If repetition is allowed?
b. If repetition is not allowed?
Example 4:
Three cards are drawn from a standard deck of
cards. Two red and one black. How many possibilities
are there?
