GW MFP/LPs can call fonts/macros from storage media
such as an HDD and then use them in a job.

Downloader V2 is a graphical tool for uploading PCL/PS
fonts and PCL macros to the hard disk/SD card of Ricoh
GW machines.

Downloader V2 comes bundled with the Unicode Font
option. However, it can be used for purposes other than
just the installation of Unicode fonts. For that reason, we
have decided to release it as a general support tool.
Downloader V2 vs Font Download Utility
Font Download Utility is an older support tool. Downloader
V2 contains some improvements over Font Download
Utility.

Basic Operation: Upload a file to an MFP/LP
1. Start Downloader V2.

2. Click “Select Printer” and input an IP Address.
3. Click the “Upload Resource to Printer” button to go to
the upload menu.
4. Click “Add to List” to browse for a file.
5. To add a file to the upload list, select the file and click
Ok.
6. After selecting all files to be uploaded, click the “Upload
to" button (HDD or SD-card).
7. After uploading the files to the MFP, you should be able to
see them in the Downloader V2 main window.
Configuration File for TrueType Fonts
TrueType fonts can only be printed in PCL5e on 05A or later
GWs. A configuration file is required in order to use TrueType
fonts.
Downloader V2 automatically creates and uploads a
“Configuration File” for each TrueType font.
Note: Downloader V2 makes the True-Type font upload process
easier by automatically creating/uploading the configuration file.
However, this is not to imply that Downloader V2 is the only way to
use true-type fonts. It is still possible to manually create/upload a
configuration file.
Supported True Type Fonts
Only True Type Fonts that contain the following four
elements can be uploaded to the device using Downloader
V2.
1. Cmap
• The cmap table must contain an entry indicating that the
font is Unicode (UCS-2).
2. Head
3. Post
4. PCLT
• This should be requested from the font vendor.

Note: Only TrueType fonts can be uploaded to a Ricoh GW
machine.
Checking fonts for the 4 required elements
If a font is missing any of the 4 elements or the Unicode
entry in the cmap table mentioned in the previous slide, the
printer is unable to use the font. For this reason
Downloader V2 will not upload the font (ttf file) to a device.
Fonts (ttf files) can be checked for the 4 requirements using
the Microsoft ttfdump tool ([Link]):

The tool creates a ttf dump (log) that will show some of the
contents of the font.
Creating a ttf dump:
• C:\>ttfdump [Link] > [Link]
– Where “[Link]” is the name of your ttf file.

Open the created ttf dump file and look for the required 4
elements:

Also check the cmap sub-table for the inclusion of
"Platform ID: 3" with "Specific ID: 1" and "Format 4“. This
indicates that this font is Unicode (UCS-2).
Resource Definition File for PCL Font/Macro
05A or later models assign a font/macro ID to each
font/macro stored on an HDD/SD-card in a file called the
"Resource Definition File". Fonts/Macros can be called in a
PCL job using this font/macro ID.
Downloader V2 will automatically create and update the
“Resource Definition File” when a PCL font/macro is
uploaded.
Note: Without Downloader V2, the "Resource Definition File" must
be created and updated manually each time a font/macro is
uploaded to the printer.
Operation: Assigning a Font/Macro ID
Situational Example
An HP machine is being replaced with a Ricoh GW
machine .
A customer uses a PCL macro stored on a DIMM in their HP
machine. The customer wants to be sure that their workflow
will not be interrupted by the replacement of their HP device.
They have provided you with the PCL macro and a sample
print file that uses the PCL macro.

Situational Example
Based on the situation described in the previous slide,
what should be done in order to meet the customer's
requirements?
1. Decode the PCL macro to get the ID that was being used in the HP machine
(In this example, the ID is "2").
