Access Control System Overview

The document provides an overview of Access Control Systems (ACS), detailing its definition, purpose, main models (Discretionary, Mandatory, and Role-Based), and types (Standalone and Networked). It outlines the components of ACS, including user interface, controller, and administrator interface, as well as communication protocols like Wiegand, RS-485, and TCP/IP. The assignment is part of a Telecommunications Engineering course at the Institute of Electrical Science.

1. What’s Access Control System?

Definition

Access Control System is a

type of security system that
is used for controlling or
selecting restriction of
access to a place or area to
enhance the security of an
organization.
1. What’s Access Control System
Purposes of
ACS

Access Control System is used to;

- Protect people: employees, vendor,
visitor.
- Property: real estate, fixture,
equipment.
- Proprietary information: unique and
necessary for organization.
- Reputation: Rules, manner
2. Main models of ACS

There are three main models of

ACS

Discretionar Mandator
y ACS y ACS

Role-
Based
ACS
Discretionary (DAC):

Discretionary (DAC): the least

restrictive model. It gives multiple
property admins or business owners —
rather than a single security
professional — the power to control who
has access to certain areas of the
building.
Mandatory (MAC):

[Link] (MAC): the opposite of

discretionary. It’s best suited for high-
security organizations with strict
confidentiality. Only one system
administrator — such as a company’s
Chief Security Officer — has the
authority to establish access
permissions.
Role-based (RBAC)

Role-based (RBAC): In a role-based access control

system, users are assigned a role, and permissions
are granted according to those roles. Building
administrators have the power to assign roles and
manage access for each role.
3. Types of ACS

There are two types of ACS:

A. Standalone ACS

B. Networked ACS
A. Standalone ACS

These happen to be the simplest types of

access control units that can be found
today in the market. This kind of access
control can be used in just one area and is
not associated with networks in similar
locations.
B. Networked ACS

This kind of system means an

access control method that
includes a single or multiple
access points that are joined to a
central server or host or are
controlled individually.
4. Components of ACS

Access Control System

defines 3 parts:
i. User interface
ii. Controller
iii. and Administrator
interface
i. User interface

 Reader
 Keypad Entry Reader
 Card Reader
 Card Technology
 Card Proximity
 Smart Card
 Electromagnetic Lock
 Door monitor/Door Contact
 Break Glass
 REX Button
ii. Controller

The controller is the heart of the system that directs

the operation of the processor.
The controller provides 2 parts such as:
- main controller
- And sub-controller
Main Controller

The main controller is

the gateway for device
communication in the
system.
Sub-controller

Sub-Controller with many

types of panels, mostly there
are door controller, relay
input controller, and relay
output controller
iii. Administrator Interface

Administrator or software configuration

is the process to control access area,
and monitoring the access control
system.
It has the main 3 parts such as
- Server
- Database MSQL
- And client software
5. Communication Protocol

 Communication
protocols are a
formal description of
digital message
formats and rules.
Wiegand

Wiegand refers to the

technology used in card
readers and sensors. This
system is a wired
communication interface that
operates between a reader
and a controller.
RS-485 communication

RS485 is a balanced line

transmission system
allowing transmission
distances of up to 1.2 km
TCP/IP Protocol

TCP/IP stands for

Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol
and is a suite of
communication protocols
used to interconnect
network devices on the
internet.
