*Introduction to

Advanced
Syntax
By Dildoraxon Tulanboyeva
*Define syntax and explain its role in
linguistics.
* Identify key elements of sentence
structure.
* Understand basic syntactic rules and
their importance.

*Objectives:
*Syntax is the study of sentence
structure—how words are organized and
combined to form meaningful sentences.
*✔ It determines word order (e.g., The cat
sleeps vs. Sleeps the cat ❌).
✔ It helps create grammatical and
meaningful sentences.
✔ Syntax varies across languages (e.g.,
English follows SVO—Subject-Verb-Object
order).
Example:
*English (SVO): She eats an apple.
*Uzbek (SOV): U olma yeydi.

*What is Syntax?
* Word Order – The correct sequence of words in a
sentence.
Example: The dog chased the cat. (✔ Correct)
Example: Chased the cat the dog. (❌ Incorrect)
* Phrase Structure – How words combine into meaningful
groups.
Example: The big brown dog (Noun Phrase)
* Sentence Structure – How different parts of a sentence
interact.
Example: She sings beautifully. (Subject + Verb + Adverb)
* Syntactic Ambiguity – When a sentence has multiple
meanings.
Example: "I saw the man with binoculars."
Meaning 1: I used binoculars to see the man.
Meaning 2: The man I saw had binoculars.

*What Does
Syntax Study?
*1. Phrases and Constituents
*2. Sentence Types Based on Structure

*Key Syntactic
Components
*Sentences are built from phrases, which are
groups of words that function together.
✔ Noun Phrase (NP) → The happy student
✔ Verb Phrase (VP) → is reading a book
✔ Prepositional Phrase (PP) → on the table
* Example Sentence Breakdown:
“ The pretty girl was cleaning the rooms of the
first floor."
*NP: The pretty girl
*VP: is cleaning the rooms
*PP: of the first floor

*Phrases and
Constituents
* Simple Sentence – 1 Independent Clause
"She reads books."
* Compound Sentence – 2 Independent Clauses
"She reads books, and she writes stories.“
* Complex Sentence – 1 Independent Clause + 1
Dependent Clause
"She reads books because she loves stories."
* Compound-Complex Sentence – 2 Independent
Clauses + 1 Dependent Clause
"She reads books, and she writes stories because
she loves literature."

*Sentence Types
Based on
*A clause is a group of words that contains
both a subject and a predicate (verb).
*Independent Clause: A complete
sentence that expresses a full idea.
* Example: "She enjoys reading."
*Dependent Clause: Cannot stand alone
and needs an independent clause for
meaning.
* Example: "Because she enjoys reading…"
(incomplete thought)

*What is a Clause?
* Definition: A sentence with two independent
clauses, joined by a coordinating conjunction
(FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).

* Example: "She studied hard, and she passed

the test.“
I like coffee, but she prefers tea.

* Structure: Independent Clause +

Coordinating Conjunction + Independent
Clause

*Compound
Sentence
* Definition: A sentence that contains one independent clause and at
least one dependent clause.

Example: "She passed the test because she studied hard.“

“She went to bed early, because she was tired.”

Structure: Independent Clause + Subordinating Conjunction +

Dependent Clause
* Common Subordinating Conjunctions:
* Because
* Although
* Since
* If
* While

*Complex
Sentence
* Definition: A sentence that includes two or
more independent clauses and at least one
dependent clause.

Example: "She studied hard, and she passed the

test because she prepared well.“
"Although it was raining, we went outside, and we
played soccer."

Structure: Independent Clause + Coordinating

Conjunction + Independent Clause +
Dependent Clause

*Compound-
Complex
Sentence
*Helps in understanding sentence
meaning.
* Essential for learning and teaching
languages.
* Used in artificial intelligence (AI) and
machine learning for natural language
processing.
*Allows for effective communication by
ensuring clear sentence structures.

*Why is Syntax
Important?
* Identify the structure of the following sentences:

"The teacher explains syntax to the students." (Identify

Subject, Verb, Object)

"Although he was tired, he continued studying." (Is it

simple, compound, or complex?)

"The girl who won the competition is my friend." (Find

the noun phrase and verb phrase.)
Discuss answers in class!

*Quick Exercise:
*Determine whether the following sentences are
compound, complex, or compound-
complex:

"I wanted to stay up late, but I was too tired.“

"Because I was hungry, I made a sandwich.“

"Although she didn’t feel well, she went to

school, and she completed her homework."
*Write five compound, complex, or
compound-complex sentences using
conjunctions and clauses.
*Find two sentences from a book, article, or
newspaper and analyze their structure
