2 Pumps Setting

Pumping Station with 2 Pumps

After selecting 2 pumps the panel changes for 2 pumps only.
As a default an additional standby pump is added, you may
remove it by unchecking the box, it will not be physically added
to the sump.
The 2 pumps are operating as duty / assist. In case, you have
one duty and one standby pump, you have to change to 1 pump
+ standby. This setting is compulsory, as the useful volume will
be calculated differently.
Next step is the selection of the pump type.

2 Pumps, Inflow Pipe Configuration

Inflow Pipe Configuration

You can choose high or low inlet levels.
At high inlet the program assumes, that the inlet pipe is not
allowed to back-up. The floor level of the sump is calculated
downwards from the inlet, the alarm level is set at the invert
level. All start – stop level will be below.

2 Pumps, Set Flows

Setting Flows
You can to over-write the default flows as given by the pumps.
The program first assumes, that the pumps have separate
discharge lines, so they will have the same flow when operating
solo and in parallel. In most cases the pumps will have a
common discharge, so you have to set the second pump to the
flow, which is added to the flow of the first pump in parallel
operation.
This is important as the minimum useful volume is calculated
and the additional flow of the second pump is weighted
differently, assuming that the pumps have different start levels,
but one common stop level, which gives the smallest sump.

2 Pumps, Baffle Yes - No

Baffles in Pumping Stations

A big, but mostly unrecognised problem in pumping stations is
the entrainment of air. Most damage of impellers (often mixed up
with cavitation) or shaft, bearing or mechanical seal failures have
their roots in air bubbles. These bubbles can be more or less
finely dissolved in the water, they lead to flow separation or in
the extreme case, that the impeller is experiencing a two-phase
medium.
Baffle walls keep away a great amount of air. They should
always be taken into account.

Benching is about Compromise

You can raise the benching
•Steeper - better so that all deposits run downwards
•Steeper - more concrete involved – cost increase
•Steeper – uses more of the useful volume, sump is getting
bigger, space has to be added as useful volume elsewhere.
•60° from the horizontal is the maximum you should do

Stop Increment
PSD calculates the useful volume for a common stop for all
pumps, which in practice everybody avoids because of water
hammer and slamming non return valves. Literally the pumps
have individual stops at different distances called “Stop
Increment”. The default is set to 50 mm, but you can change to
any value depending on the possible resolution of your level
control system. The additional volume caused by this increment
is automatically added to the useful volume by PSD.

A Special for Pumping station with low Inlet
For pumping stations with a low inlet, the floor of the station is at
the same level as the invert of the inlet pipe. In many cases the
inlet pipe can be assumed to be part of the needed useful
volume. This allocation of the useful volume gives the possibility,
to make the pumping station smaller – and save money.
Note:
•Make sure, that the inlet pipe can be back upped.
•The inlet pipe has a gradient, meaning that in most cases you
cannot assume the full length of the pipe is available for the
additional volume. The water in the pipe is somewhat like a
“wedge”.
•Please check also for the losses of the flowing water in the inlet
pipe for the maximum flow.

Reducing the Inflow Velocity

In a large pumping station there may be a lot of dynamic energy
in the inflow, especially at high velocities. This dynamic energy
can “jet” into the sump and create vortices, which can cause
unexpected trouble and malfunction. A trapezoidal inlet area
configuration reduces the inflow velocity and transfers at least
part of the dynamic energy to static energy.

Saving Concrete
The basic automatic design starts with the invert level of the
inflow pipe, sets the width of the station to the minimum pump
inlet requirement and establishes the useful volume needed in
the length of the station. After all modifications like transition and
part-volume in the inflow pipe the useful volume installed is
larger than required. By comparing the values at the lower left
panel the length and as a result the useful volume can be
manually adjusted.
PSD uses a special test proven ABS model design algorithm for
establishing the minimum requirement for the pump inlet
chamber width. (If you want to test, just change the pump flow
and you will see that the pumping station width changes.)

The Walls above the Inlet

These walls are hydraulically seen as an area of no interest,
they are called freeboard. PSD allows the height of the sump to

8+1 Pumps, Baffle Wall Setting
Baffles in Pumping Stations
A big, but mostly unrecognised problem in pumping stations is
the entrainment of air. Most damage of impellers (often mixed up
with cavitation) or shaft, bearing or mechanical seal failures have
their roots in air bubbles. These bubbles can be more or less
finely dissolved in the water, they lead to flow separation or in
the extreme case, that the impeller is experiencing a two-phase
medium.
Baffle walls keep away a great amount of air. They should
always be taken into account.
In pumping stations with low inlet mostly baffle walls can be
omitted. Exceptions:
•The inlet is jetting in or joining sideward (model test advisable!)
•There are jumps (weirs) in the inlet pipe or culvert, entraining
lots of air

The file may be imported into e.g. AUTODESK software and be
used as a basis for a complete pumping station drawing.

Note:
•PSD is not a CAD system, but it generates DXF files for CAD
input.
•PSD calculates a pump sump considering only hydraulical
aspects. Only the inner shape of the sump is calculated. Walls
are only shown to give a better optical view. The correct
thickness and properties are the responsibility of the station
designing consultant.

Prefabricated Stations
PSD allows, to incorporate DXF workshop drawings for
prefabricated pumping stations. Sump body, pedestals pipe work
and valves are pre-defined. The optimum start-stop levels and
the advisable sump volume are calculated by the program. If
necessary pre-defined concrete bodies, e.g. concrete pipe rings
are added. Finally a completed workshop drawing is generated.

Setting Flows
You have to over-write the default flows by the flows as given by
the pumps.
The program first assumes, that the pumps they will have the
same flow, when operating solo and in parallel. normally the
pumps will have a common discharge, so you have to set the
second pump to the flow, which is added to the flow of the first
pump in parallel operation.
This is important as the minimum useful volume is calculated
and the additional flow of the second pump is weighted
differently, assuming that the pumps have different start, but one
common stop level, which gives the smallest sump.
Just click Design Sump and you will get your drawing.

Useful Volume Definition
The Volume between start and the stop level
Only the volume between start and stop of the pumps is actually
available as storage volume for matching the pump flow to the
varying inflow to the sump. If the useful volume is too small, the
pump will start too often and overheating of the motor or
mechanical failures may result.
The calculation of the minimum useful volume looks simple, but
there is a lot physical and mathematical background: Start

0.9 Qp
Vn  Useful
Z Volume
Vn = Useful Volume [m³]
Qp = Delivery of pump [l/s]
Stop
Z = Number of permissible starts per hour

Useful Volume & Maximum Starts

Inflow = 50% of pump flow

= Maximum Starts
The Start of the Pump
The maximum number of starts per hour is exactly achieved,
when the inflow to the sump is half the pump flow. So the
maximum is not – as sometimes believed – a value which will
never be reached, it is a day to day operational reality of the
installation. no inflow = max. inflow =
no start continous operation

Useful Volume
Multiple Pump Stations
The old method of starting and stopping pumps has been to allocate
staggered start and stop levels to each physical pump. Meaning for
example, to start pump No 2 at rising level in equidistant distance to
the start of pump No 1 and stop this pump at the start level of pump
No 1. This regime needs the full useful volume as calculated for each
pump.
For several years a new regime of interchanging the physical pumps
at each start sequence and to stop all pumps at one common stop
level has been in use. This regime has a big advantage, that
statistically the number of starts for each pump is decreasing with
each pump installed. The more pumps installed – the lower is the
useful volume to be provided. E.g. the 2nd pump will need only about
40%, the 3rd about 27%, the 4th about 22% of the calculated useful
volume for pump 1.
Please note, that use of this regime will result in smaller necessary
useful volumes as more pumps are installed for the same total inflow.

Hydraulic Loading
An Experienced Value from Model Test
As a result of many model tests a useful hint for the optimum
function of a sump has been derived. The hydraulic loading is
the flow of the pumps in relation to the surface area of sewage in
a sump. The unit is [l/s] / m².
When benching is included into the sump you easily see how
important this feature is. Normally the value for the Hydraulic
Loading is taken for the stop level of the pumps.

Benching
Rule of the sump:
< 30 l/s / m² suspect for sedimentation
50 to 60 l/s / m² optimum conditions
> 100 l/s / m² problems due to turbulence and vortices
