DOMINGO THE AWESOME

FARMER

Prepared by:

JUMELYN B. DE LUNA
GUIDE CARD
Hi everyone! I am Domingo, a Grade 8
student like you. While going home I
saw my dad worrying about his farm.
He doesn’t know what kind of
vegetable he will plant that will gave
more profit. In order to help him,
please go with me in the farm here in
Pangasinan to overcome the following
challenges:

TOPIC: FACTORING
(M8AL – Ia –b – 1),(M8AL – Ib – 2)
Determine whether the expression is
polynomial or not
Determine whether the algebraic
expression is a perfect square trinomial
Give the factor of perfect square trinomial
GUIDE CARD
First you must know if the expression is a
polynomial or non polynomial.

But….How?

By giving the definition and examples on

polynomials.

Polynomials are algebraic expressions that are created by

combining numbers and variables using arithmetic operations
such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and
exponentiation. You can create a polynomial by adding or
subtracting terms. Polynomials are very useful in applications
from science and engineering to business. You may see a
resemblance between expressions, which we have been
studying in this course, and polynomials. Polynomials are a
special sub-group of mathematical expressions and equations.
GUIDE CARD

Take a look of
some examples:

Based on the examples we can say that:

These are not polynomials
3xy-2 is not, because the exponent is "-2" (exponents can only be 0,1,2,...)
2/(x+2) is not, because dividing by a variable is not allowed
1/x is not either
√x is not, because the exponent is "½" (fractional exponents)

But these are allowed:

x/2 is allowed, because you can divide by a constant
also 3x/8 for the same reason
√2 is allowed, because it is a constant (= 1.4142...etc)
GUIDE CARD

Now, you already know if the expression is

polynomial or not. Next, you will know the
different steps on factoring a perfect square
trinomial.
Come and let’s
start the
adventure!
Do you still remember the square of
binomial?

F = First term multiplied by First term
O = Outer Term multiplied by Outer Term
I = Inner Term multiplied by Inner Term

FIRST TERM = a
SUBSTITUTE the given value in
the derived formula

FIRST TERM = a =2x

LAST TERM = b = 2

How do we easily identify if the given expression
is a Perfect Square Trinomial or not?
A PERFECT SQUARE TRINOMIAL has FIRST TERM and LAST TERMS which are
PERFECT SQUARE and the MIDDLE TERM is twice the product of the square root of
FIRST TERM and LAST TERM.
MIDDLE LAST
FIRST TERM
TERM TERM
Example:
= =x
= =2
MIDDLE TERM = 2(x)(2)=4x

and 4 is a PERFECT SQUARE

4x is 2(x)(2)
