Recap
The derivative of a function gives us the slope of the
line tangent to the function atany point on the graph.
This can be used to find the equation of that tangen
The derivative of the function f whose value at a
number x in the domain of f is given by:
if the limit exist.
Rules for Finding the
Derivitative
RULE 1: The Derivative of a
Constant
A constant function f(x) is defined by f(x) = c or y = c
and has a derivative f'(x) = 0 or y' = c , respectively.
eXAMPLE
: If f(x) = 10, then f' (x) =
1.

RULE 2: The Derivative of a Power
Let y = f(x) = x ^ n where n is a positive integer, then
for every real value of x
eXAMPLE
: If f(x) = x ^ 3 then f’(x)

RULE 3: The Derivative of a Constant
Multiple
If f(x) = k h(x) where k is a constant, then f' (x) = k h'
(x).

RULE 4: The Derivative of Sum and
Differences
Let y = u + v and y = u - v where u = f(x) and v =
g(x) are differentiable functions of x, then

RULE 5: The Derivative of a Product
If f and g are differentiable functions, then
eXAMPLE
:Find f'(x) if f(x) = (3x²-4)(x² - 3x)

RULE 6: The Derivative of a Quotient
Let f(x) and g(z) be two differentiable functions
with g(x) ≠ 0. Then
RULE 6: The Derivative of a
The rule above states that the derivative of the
Quotient
quotient of two functions is the fraction having as its
denominator the square of the original denominator,
and as its numerator the de- nominator times the
derivative of the numerator minus the numerator
times the derivative of the denominator.
