Focal Point: Emphasis & Subordination
Emphasis:

size, or placement.
Example: In da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” the
face stands out while the background
fades into the background.

Subordination:
• Reduces elements to avoid competition for
attention, creating a visual hierarchy.
Example: In The Last Supper by
Leonardo da Vinci, the
background and secondary
figures are muted in color and
detail, ensuring that Jesus
remains the focal point.
The Rule of Thirds
Grid Structure:
• A composition is divided into nine equal sections
using intersecting lines.
Purpose: Creates balance and
guides the viewer’s focus.
