Script Writing

MYP 5
Objective:
● What is the purpose of different types of scripts?
● How are scripts structured?
● How can we differentiate between each type of script?
● Based off of the knowledge gained during the lesson, can we write our own
script independently?
Discussion questions:
● What do you think a script is?
● Can you think of any examples of media that use scripts?
● What might be different about a script for a podcast compared to one for a film
or play?
Let’s Collaborate!
Objective: You will analyze and compare different types of scripts collaboratively to understand their features
and structure.
● Each group will be provided with one type of script to analyze (film script, TV show script, podcast
script, and play script).
● Instructions:
○ Read through the assigned script sample as a group.
○ Discuss the following questions:
■ Structure: How is the script organized? Are there scenes, acts, or specific time
divisions?
■ Language: What type of language is used (e.g., formal, conversational)?
■ Purpose and Audience: What is the script's purpose (e.g., to entertain, inform, etc.)?
Who is the intended audience?
■ Key Elements: Look for essential elements like dialogue, character development, and
stage directions.
■ Discuss how each script approaches the theme of technology (e.g., through character
interactions, ethical dilemmas, futuristic settings, etc.). How does the dialogue and
actions relate to technological and scientific innovation.
● Group Sharing: After you have analyzed your scripts (about 10 minutes), you will share your findings
with the class. During discussion you are expected to provide examples from the script and discuss the
features they identified.

Independent Writing Task
Now you will begin your own script-writing task based on what they have learned.

● Independent Task Instructions:


○ Task: Write the opening scene (or opening dialogue) for a script based on a scientific or technological innovation. This could
be a film, TV show, podcast, or play.
○ Provide students with a script writing template or an outline handout to guide them in structuring their scripts.
○ Considerations: Remind them to use the knowledge gained from the collaborative analysis of script types. They should:
■ Think about the genre and type of script they are writing.
■ Organize their writing (following the structure of the genre they’ve chosen).
■ Focus on clear language and purpose (engage the audience, create tension, or inform).
● Encourage students to:
○ Develop their characters briefly (who are they, what do they want?).
○ Set up an initial conflict or interaction.
○ Consider the tone and style (for example, serious for a documentary-style script or light-hearted for a TV show).
● Writing time: You will be allowed with 10-15 minutes to start drafting your scripts.
