HRB Soil Classification for Geotech Engineering

The document discusses the HRB Classification system used for soil classification based on particle-size composition and plasticity characteristics, primarily for pavement construction. It explains the Group Index (GI) as a measure of soil performance in subgrade material, detailing its calculation and factors involved. Additionally, it outlines various applications of the HRB classification in highway construction, foundation design, geotechnical engineering, and soil stabilization.

Course code -
Soil Classification : HRB Classification and
it's applications

Introduction -

➤Based on both particle-size composition as well as

plasticity characteristics.
➤Mostly used for pavement construction.
➤7 primary groups (A-1, A-2,...., A-7).
➤A-1 subdivided into 2 subgroups.
➤A-2 subdivided into 4 subgroups.
Group Index (GI)-

➤Used to describe performance of soil when used for

pavement construction.
➤Not used to place a soil in a particular group.
➤It means rating the value of soil as a subgrade
material within its own group.
➤Higher the value of Gl, poorer is the quality of
material.
Group Index (GI) determination -
Group Index of a soil depends on:
1. Amount of material passing 75 micron IS sieve.
2. Liquid Limit.
3. Plastic Limit.
Group index=0.2a +0.005 ac + 0.01bd
where
a - that portion of percentage passing 75 mircon sieve greater than 35
and not exceeding 75 expressed as a whole number (0 to 40)
b -that portion of percentage passing 75 micron sieve greater than 15
and not exceeding 55 expressed as a whole number (0 to 40)
c -that portion of the numerical liquid limit greater than 40 and not
exceeding 60 expressed as positive whole number (0 to 20)
d - that portion of the numerical plasticity index greater than 10 and
not exceeding 30 expressed as a positive whole number (0 to 20).
Example -

➤56% passes 75 micron sieve.

➤ Plastic Limit (Wp) =23%
➤Liquid Limit (w₁)=36%
Plasticity Index (Ip) = 36-23-13%
Applications of HRB Classification-

1. Highway Construction: The HRB

classification system is widely used in highway construction to
determine the suitability of soils for use as subgrade materials, base
courses, and pavement layers.
2. Foundation Design: The HRB
classification system is used to determine the bearing capacity of soils
and to design foundations for buildings, bridges, and other structures.
3. Geotechnical Engineering: The HRB classification system is used to
evaluate the stability of slopes, embankments, and other earth
structures.
4. Soil Stabilization: The HRB classification system is used to determine
the suitability of soils for stabilization using various methods, such as
lime or cement stabilization.
