Objectives
At the end of this discussion, we must able to answer the
following questions:

1. How do we defined Science? Technology? and Society?

How do Science, Technology and Society interact with each other or how
2.
they are related?

3. What is Science, Technology and Society (STS)?

What are the historical antecedents that changed the course of Science &

1. How do we define…
Science
TECHNOLOGY
Society
Science
Came from the latin word “Scientia” which means Knowledge.

A system of acquiring knowledge based on the scientific

method

As a process used to solve problems or develop an

understanding of nature that involves testing possible
answers.

An organized, systematic and methodical activity of building

and organizing knowledge about how the universe behaves
through observation, experiment or both.
Science
As a discovery of regularity in nature, enough for
natural phenomena to be described by principles
and laws.

Tries to discover facts and relationships and the

tries to create theories that makes sense of the
facts and relationships.
Technology
It refers to methods, systems, and
devices which are the result of
scientific, knowledge being used for
practical purposes.

The human attempt to change the

world … by creating products that
make our life easier.

Cames from the greek word “techne”,

Technology
-It refers to methods, systems, and devices which
are the result of scientific knowledge being used for
practical purposes. Ex:?

- The human attempt to change the world… by

creating products that make our life easier.
1. How do we define…
Science Process of acquiring Scientific knowledge

Technology Application of Scientific knowledge for People

Society Group of people who uses technology and who

are studying science
2. How do Science, Technology and Society
interact with each other or how they are
related?
Sci-Explores for the purpose of Knowing
Tech- Explores for the purpose of making something
useful from that knowledge.
Soc- Explores Science and Technology for a better life
Science
Seeks to improved Informs

Technology is the use or

application of scientific knowledge Demands more
Demands more for a specific goal or purpose

Society Technology
Benefits from Makes life easier
2. How do they interact?
Science drives technology by making new
technology possible through scientific
breakthroughs.

Sample illustration in board: interaction of Tech and

sci.
2. How do they interact?

Ex. Engineers focus on using

science to develop products.
Ex. Entrepreneur
Without
technology,
some science
experiments
would not be
possible.
Ex: sick detector.
2. How do they interact?
-Without science, technology could not
proceed.
-Science is a way of knowing

-Technology is a way of
doing

The very questions that scientists ask the shaped by the available
technology.
Science

Better World
Technology Society
3. Is it important to study science,
technology and society (STS)? Why?. What is
STS?

Science, Technology & Society (STS)

-is a relatively young field that combines
previously independent and older disciplines,
such as History of Science, Philosophy
of Science and Sociology of science.
Science, Technology & Society
(STS)
-Applies methods drawn from history, philosophy and sociology
to study the nature of science and technology and ultimately
judge their value and place in society.

- Seeks to bridge the gap between two traditionally exclusive

culture- humanities and natural sciences – so that human will be
able to better confront the moral, ethical, and existential
dilemmas brought by the continued development in science and
technology.
Science and Technnology and
Society(STS)
Technology Social - Is the study of how social,
innovation STS Values
political and cultural values
CYCLE
affect scientific research and
Scientific technological innovation, and
Research
how these in turn affect society,
politics and culture.
4. What are the historical antecedents that
changed the course of science and technology?

Historical Antecedents of
SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY
“Those who do not learn history
are doomed to repeat it.”

Sir Winston Churchill

ANTECEDENTS
• It is defined as precursor to the unfolding or existence of something .
• Antecedents of science and technology are factors that paved way
for the presence of advanced and sophisticated scientific and
technological innovations today.
