Electrical Installation &
Maintenance (EIM)
Layout and Install Rigid Metallic
Tubing
TLE 9 - Week 4, Quarter 2
Introduction
• This lesson focuses on the knowledge and
skills needed to layout and install rigid metallic
conduit (RMC). It includes PEC provisions,
fittings, and bends required for safe and
reliable electrical wiring installations.
Philippine Electrical Code (PEC)
Provisions
• 1. Standard size: RMC lengths are 10 feet, with
diameters ranging from ½ to 6 inches.
• 2. Protection: Enamel-protected conduits are
for indoor use only.
• 3. Corrosion protection: Install conduits with
proper corrosion protection in concrete or
direct burial.
• 4. Avoid dissimilar metals to prevent galvanic
reactions.
Tools and Equipment
• Essential Tools:
• - Hacksaw or pipe cutter
• - Reamer or round file
• - Dies and die stock
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• - Gloves
• - Goggles
• - Hard hat
Installation Process
• 1. Prepare tools, materials, and equipment.
• 2. Read and interpret the working drawing.
• 3. Wear appropriate PPE.
• 4. Layout and measure electrical box
positions.
• 5. Install boxes and cut conduits to desired
lengths.
• 6. Ream conduit ends and install RMC as per
the drawing.
Bending and Cutting RMC
• Bending:
• - Use a hickey or conduit bender.
• - Follow similar procedures as for electrical
metallic tubing.
• Cutting:
• - Use a hacksaw or pipe cutter.
• - Secure the pipe with a bench vise for safety.
• - Remove burrs with a reamer or round file.
