Understanding Normal Distribution Basics

The document explains the normal distribution, also known as Gaussian distribution, highlighting its significance in statistical analysis. Key properties include its bell shape, symmetry, and the equality of mean, median, and mode. It also provides examples of applying normal distribution to real-world scenarios, such as student test scores and company profits.

Normal

Distribution
Normal Distribution
•also known as Gaussian distribution is
the most important of all distribution
because it describes the situation in
which very large values are rather rare,
very small values are rather rare, but the
middle values are rather common.
Properties of Normal Probability
Distribution
1. The normal distribution is a bell-shaped
2. The mean, median and mode are equal and located
at the center of the distribution
3. A normal distribution curve is unimodal
4. The curve is symmetrical about the mean
5. The total area under the normal curve is 1.
6. The distribution curve is asymptotic to the x-axis.
Application of Normal
Distribution
Example:
The scores of 120
students in a test is
normally distributed
with a mean of 88 and a
standard deviation of 5.
Find the percentage of
the students who got a
score of below 96.
Application of Normal Distribution
Example:
PNRS Company has 140
branches nationwide.
The annual profit is
normally distributed with
a mean of 75 million a
year and a standard
deviation of 3.15 million.
How many branches
have a profit of below 70
million?
Practice Problem:
Application of Normal
Distribution
•The scores of 80 students in a
test is normally distributed with
a mean of 70 and a standard
deviation of 7. How many
students got a score of 80 to 90?
