Bible
The word “BIBLE” comes from
the latin word "biblia", which
means "book".
The Bible is the holy scripture of the
Christian religion, purporting to tell the
history of the Earth from its earliest creation
to the spread of Christianity in the first
century A.D.
The Bible was written by inspired men called
prophets. God spoke to prophets like Moses
and Isaiah, and they wrote down His
teachings. These writings make up the Old
Testament. The New Testament is a collection
of first-person accounts from Jesus’s followers
and letters from Paul and other apostles. Both
of these testaments were later translated and
compiled into the book we know today as the
Bible.
The Bible is a

between God and
His people for
over 4,000 years.
Their inspired

we know today
as the Holy Bible.
 Books in the old testament are
categorized into three which are:

The Bible has two parts, the Old
Testament and the New Testament.

 Old Testament – books that were written

before Jesus was born. of 46 individual
books.

New Testament – books that were written

after He was born. 27 books, giving the
Bible a total of .
 Old Testament
The old testament is composed of
Historical books
- Tells the story of the Jewish people from
creation to about 600 BC.
- Nearly half of the bible from Genesis to
Esther consist of historical books.
- Example:
The first five Historical
books are called the
Pentateuch.
 What does a
“Pentateuch” mean?
The Pentateuch refers to the first five books
which are the foundation of the bible.
The word Pentateuch comes from the Greek
word Pente means five and teuch means
book. The word “means five vessels” “five
container” or “five volume book”
In Hebrew, Pentateuch is Torah, meaning “the
laws” or “instruction”.
These five books are almost entirely written
in Hebrew, are the Bible’s books of the law
given to us by god through Moses. Therefore
the Pentateuch is also known as the “five
books of Moses”.
Pentateuch
The Pentateuch includes
five books which are:
1. Genesis
2. Exodus
3. Leviticus
4. Numbers
5. Deuteronomy
Genesis
-the book of beginnings. It tells the creation of
the world the universe and mankind.
• The word Genesis means origin, birth,
generation and beginning. It reveals the plan
within God’s heart to have a people of his
very own.
Exodus
- In this book God reveals himself by setting
his people free from Bondage in Egypt through
a series of miracles. To his people God made
himself known through extraordinary
revelation through their leader Moses.
Leviticus
- This book is God’s Guidebook in teaching
his people about holy living and worship.
Everything from the handling of food, to
instructions of worship and religious
celebrations are covered in details in this
book.
- Example: Pigs
Numbers
- This book records Israel’s experiences
while journeying through the wilderness.
The people’s disobedience and lack of faith
caused God to make them wonder until all
the people of that generation had died.
Deuteronomy
- This book was written when God’s people
were about to enter the promise land.
 Deuteronomy has been called: • The “Book
of Remembrance.” • Moses' “Upper Dessert
Discourse.” n Deuteronomy covers a time
frame of about one month. n The Israelites
are camped in the Plains of Moab. n
Deuteronomy consists of a series of farewell
messages by Israel's 120 year-old leader,
Moses.
Poetic Books
 were referred to as the wisdom books.
Five books that were categorized as wisdom
books are:
 Job
 Psalms
 Proverbs
 Ecclesiastes
 Song of Solomon
The Wisdom literature of the Old
Testament is an eclectic
collection of proverbs, moral
lessons, riddles, warnings,
extended meditations, and
philosophical inquiry and debate.
It also includes hymns and even
love poetry in the Song of Songs.
Job- the oldest book of the bible.
Psalms –referred as God’s hymnal, it is a
collection of poetry penned by different
authors.
Proverbs – known as God’s treasury of
wisdom, it is a vast collection of wise
saying written by King Solomon Himself.
Ecclesiastes –was also written by King
Solomon, that tackles about the
emptiness of life devoted to worldly
pursuits.
Song of Solomon -A story of love between
a man and a woman- a lyrical poem.
Prophecy books
In the Hebrew canon the Prophets are
divided into (1) the
Former Prophets Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and
Kings
Latter Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel,
12 Minor Prophets : Hosea, Joel, Amos,
Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk,
Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
These books record God's messages to the
people of Israel and Judah in the form of
speeches or sermons, visions, and life
experiences of prophets who preached
between about 750 and 450 B.C. Some of the
messages are of judgment and warning, while
others focus on forgiveness and renewal.
 The New Testament
The new testament is consist of books written
after Jesus Christ was born.
It consist of 27 books written by different
authors.
It is divided into four groups: Gospels, Acts of
the Apostles, Epistles and Apocalypse.
It also contains 4 gospels: Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John
An epistle was a letter written on a scroll
most often dictated by an author to a scribe
and then reviewed by the author before being
delivered by a trustworthy messenger.
Epistles in the Scriptures are only found in
the New Testament, which contains 21 such
letters extending from Romans to Jude.
 Synoptic Gospels
The first three of these are usually referred to
as the "synoptic gospels," because they look
at things in a similar way, or they are similar
in the way that they tell the story.
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are
referred to as the synoptic Gospels because
they include many of the same stories, often
in a similar sequence and in similar or
sometimes identical wording. They stand in
contrast to John, whose content is largely
distinct.

Apocalypse (Revelation)
Apocalypse is a word that means "the end of
the world" — or something so destructive it
seems like the world has ended in a place,
like a major earthquake. The apocalypse is
the total destruction of the world, as
prophesied in the biblical book of Revelation.
Significance of the old
testament
The Old Testament is a critical foundation for
the New Testament. Books like the Gospels,
Romans, and Hebrews are more easily
understood with a working knowledge of the
Mosaic Law, Israel's history, and Old
Testament prophecies about the Messiah.
Significance of the new
testament
The New Testament is a record of the life,
teachings, and mission of Jesus Christ and the
ministry of His disciples in promoting the
spread of the early Christian Church.
 What role does Sacred Scripture
play in the church?
In article one on Divine Revelation, we saw
that divinely revealed truth, also called the
“deposit of faith” is transmitted from one
generation to another through Sacred
Scripture and Sacred Tradition. The Church
is the guardian and the authentic interpreter
of this divinely revealed truth.
Significance of New Testament to
Christians
Christians see in the New Testament the
fulfillment of the promise of the Old
Testament. It relates and interprets the new
covenant, represented in the life and death of
Jesus, between God and the followers of
Christ, the promised Messiah. Like the Old
Testament, it contains a variety of kinds of
writing
How did God reveal Himself in
the Old Testament?
God shows himself in the old testaments as
God, who created the world out of love and
remains faithful to men even when they have
fallen away from him into sin.
What is the right way to read the
Bible?
The right way to read the sacred scripture is
to read it prayerfully, in other words with the
help of the Holy Spirit, under whose influence
it came into being.
 What significance does the new
Testament have for Christians?
In the new Testament God’s Revelation is
completed. The four gospels according to
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the center
piece of the sacred scripture and the most
Sacred Scripture of the church.

The church draws her life and strength from
the sacred scripture.
